There is a flower within my warm heart...

[Despite the slight breeze on the roof that afternoon, the whole area smelt of cigarette smoke. Huey knew smoking helped him think and he had been lost in thought for hours, more than a few used cigarettes lying within the ash tray nearby.]

[Talking to a certain version of Hal had cleared up a lot about his son's and Julie's affair but Papa Emmerich ( Read more... )

[The confines of the building were wearing on them more and more as of late, so it was no surprise that Dimitri would make his way up to the roof. That someone was already there was no surprise either, although whom the other person was was a mystery. The psychic could not recall ever meeting someone with such an ornate kind of wheelchair.]

[Walking towards the edge, he waved away the smoke, creating a psychic bubble to keep it away. Much as he sympathized with the need to have vices, he liked his wet.]

I don't think we've met before.

[The man's oceanic eyes looked over at the other man, pausing to stare at the gas mask he had on, wondering why in the world he was wearing that.]

No. I don't think we have. You seem like the type of person who's hard to forget.

[And he shifted his cig to the other side of his lips but didn't stop quite yet.]

But if you want to 'blow your own roof,' feel free to do so. I don't mind.

[Why else would someone be wearing a gas mask?]

[Interesting eye color. Obviously related to the Hal he met, but how so, he was in no particular mood to find out with mind reading.]

[The slightly archaic phrase got him to chuckle and he sat on the edge.]

I don't smoke. I got my fill of smoke inhalation when I was a boy. Drugs like marijuana are best cooked with anyway. It preserves the effect more strongly and prevents smoking related health issues, or so I'm told.

[He felt a little awkward that he had picked the guy out to be a smoker and he wasn't. Opps.]

Oh... Sounds about right.

[Huey had smoked some Chiba Chiba back in the day but he wasn't too much of a fan. Didn't go down quite as smoothly.]

Name's Huey. [Time to change the subject.]

Dimitri Lebedov. A pleasure to meet you, Huey.

[Not that Dimitri blamed him for wanting to smoke cannabis. Once your life is stressful enough, chemical addictions were to be expected. He crossed one leg over another, wondering why this wheelchair was so large.]

Dimitri Lebedov... Russian?

[He stubbed out his current cig and debated having another one. Maybe in a little while. Emmerich coughed into his sleeve a few times.]

That I am. Born and raised in the unforgiving winters of mother Russia.

[He winced at the couching, catching signs of the tell-tale wear and tear on the lungs.]

Hm... I used to have a friend who lived there. He loved his country.

[Huey, of course, was thinking of Granin.]

Без труда́ не вы́тащишь и ры́бку из пруда́.

He told me that once.

I haven't heard that little proverb in years!

[Dimitri almost smiled at the phrase, even though it was one he often heard from his father.]

It means, "Without effort, you cannot pull a fish from a pond." A fancy way of saying "No pain, no gain."

[Huey looked over at him, perhaps looking a bit curious.]

Yup. That's the definition he told me, too.

And that's... about all the Russian I know off the top of my head.

It's not the easiest language to learn after your primary one, although English was not much easier.

I'm sure there are books in the library that could help you learn more phrases. It's surprisingly varied in it's materials.

I can imagine... It doesn't even use the same alphabet that English does. - Heh. Yeah. I've heard English is hard if it's not your first language. Blame most of the grammar rules not making much sense.

Uh, I think I'll pass. Is there really that much of a point if everyone speaks English here? [Huey was knowledgeable in Spanish and Hebrew, too. He wasn't sure he could handle a 4th one, if he didn't count all the programming languages he knew.]

I will agree that the libraries here are pretty nice... except don't get on the bad side of the librarians. One got pretty grouchy at me. [Apparently taking apart of library computers wasn't a good move.]

My saving grace was books. Once you can read the language, speaking it isn't so hard.

I suppose not. [Dimitiri shrugged at that. He spoke Russian and English fluently, and picked up various phrases of Japanese over the years, so he could understand the reluctance.] But it could be something to do.

Lucky our library has no librarian.

For most languages, yeah. I doubt the oriental languages follow that theory though. [Huey didn't really know. He knew minimal of any of the languages.]

It could... but I'd rather dedicate my time to things that interest me more. Like all the technologies that exist here that didn't exist back home.

Which floor is the library you go to on? I think I've already read everything in the one I visit often. [More like he wanted to spend hours at another one, if possible. Preferably with less people in it.]

Japanese would certainly fit that idea. Three different writing systems for three different purposes and the same set of syllable has multiple meanings depending on how you use it.

Well, for such purposes, I would not be surprised if there were common rooms full of scrap metals and broken tech.

It's... [Three floors up from the apartment, so...] On the tenth floor. Floor to ceiling shelves and more subjects than I can count.

Ah, right. I had a friend who spoke Japanese. He tried to teach me some but I never picked up much... 'Kimi no karada wa totemo iroppokute, sono hada o kakushiteru fuku o nuidehoshi.' I remember him teaching me that one. Forgot what it means though.

[Yup. Back in the day, Kaz tried to teach him some Japanese flirtations. They never worked on Dr. Strangelove.]

There are plenty of those. [He pushed up his glasses.] Are you interested in future technologies at all?

[Would be nice to have someone to talk about them with.]

Tenth floor. Got it. [Huey committed it to memory.] Thanks for the info.
