So, I was trying to get my friend to watch Glee yesterday, and she said, "Wow, I would've never expected you to watch this show. Why do you like it?" I couldn't come up with a better reason than: "The song are catchy...and there are bright colours? ...I like bright colours?"
True, Glee flaunts and mocks the usual high school stereotypes, and minority groups are actually represented (in so far as: they exist) -- but then what? The main characters (i.e. ones with the most lines) are still White, heterosexual, and able bodied. The jocks are on top of the food chain, the gay boy has an unrequited crush on a straight boy, the Asians are referred to as "the Asian" and "the other Asian", each main male character desires multiple female characters (and are not frowned upon for their behaviour) yet when the roles reverse, the female characters are met with disapproval...and the list goes on.
What does Glee offer that other shows don't? Catchy songs and bright colours are about the extent of my list.
Well, what actually drives me nuts is the fact that the characters seem to be friends one moment, then ganging up on each other the next, and two scenes later, they're all holding hands and skipping around, singing songs. I can't keep up with the moodswingin'.
But, y'know, catchy songs and bright colours. I'm easy like that.
