The power went out again last night, and since I had some battery power left on my computer, I wrote an entry in Notepad:

11:12pm July 9, 2008

I am typing this entry by candlelight (and a battery powered laptop<3). It is kind of irritating that I must do so, but it's also kind of novel. In an irritating sort of way. XD Second time in one month that there's a power outage! WHY. And it appears to be just in our grid. D: I am concerned about the cream and the milk and the ICE CREAM. ;___:

As I walk from room to room, I have to fight the urge to reach over and flick on a lamp or an overhead light. It's like being in a dream where the lights don't work and you feel a little flutter of panic as you realize that you're stuck in the dark. The dim candlelight feels somewhat surreal.

I have two candles lit right now. The one in a glass jar appears to be having seizures. Candles are fickle.

As we drove home from my mom's office (where there *was* electricity), we realized that it was just our neighbourhood that was without light. As we entered our area, the lights from the other areas grew dim and eventually disappeared from view. The streetlights were all dark, as were the porchlights and the indoor lights. It was strange, weaving through streets that were entirely engulfed in darkness. The headlights bounced off of stop signs and bus stop posts and the rear reflectors of other cars, which looked like swarms of red beady eyes glowing from the darkness. (Yeah, creepy much?) The creep factor aside, as we pulled into our driveway and turned off the headlights, I could see that the only source of light was coming from the half moon, brightly shining in the sky, casting the clouds in a light purple shade. There appeared to be more stars than usual. I would have liked to lie on the garage roof to just watch the stars and the clouds...if there wasn't a high risk of me rolling right off the roof. ;;;

Okay, 11:26pm. Here's to hoping that the electricity returns soon. :x Bless be the battery-powered electronics.

So on Tuesday, after class, Friend R left the classroom as Friend B and I stayed to ask the instructor about something. A minute later, Friend R comes rushing back into the room, with the kind of excitement usually reserved for cute animals and cute boys, telling us to hurry and follow her. We jogged through the hallway after her, completely and utter perplexed. She stopped right around the corner and pointed to something, giggling hysterically. It was a water fountain, gurgling and spewing mud. Like any other person would do in this situation, the three of us whipped out our cell phones and started taking pictures. Lo and behold, the mud spewing fountain :D

Speaking of pictures and cell phones, I realized mine can support moving .gif images as wallpapers. I now have this picture as my background and I giggle every time I flip open my phone.

Say, hypothetically, you've roped some poor professor into being your undergrad thesis supervisor. Now, your thesis project doesn't start until September, but he asks you if you want to do some work as an RA (aka research assistant aka professor's lackey) during the summer. He's this nice, but completely scatterbrained and quite possibly computer-illiterate old man. He doesn't say anything about pay, but he does say, in his first email about RA-ing, "do you want to be hired for the summer?" So, hypothetically, how would you go about asking him whether you're hired as in hired or if you're simply working as a volunteer? ;;;
