twenty-ten

Well, I'm not going to make it a new years resolution or anything, but I really need to get back into journaling. About a month ago I tried to strike it up again, but haven't been keeping up too well. But with my bad memory, I feel its something I really need to do. I will try to put together a synopsis of the last few weeks soon, for now here is the first day of a new decade:

Carol has been sick with strep throat, so we stayed home new years eve and watched Cars. Good movie actually, I liked their stylization of old Rt. 66 and I-40, both of which path through Flagstaff and along which we often traveled on our trips back to visit people in IL. As a result, we slept in this morning and I got bogged down in a few projects so I didn't get out the door until almost 11am.

I headed to the Arboretum to take some photos of evergreen trees. I was short on time, and really just wandering aimlessly in the single digit weather so only got a couple species shot. Learned a few things though, like cloudy skies with snow on the ground make for some bland photos with white backgrounds. Also, going to need to get a grey card to photograph small plant parts on. Beautiful cold, quiet day at the Arboretum though.

Anyway, had some errands to run by the west side mall, so I hi-tailed it out of there, and of course, nothing goes according to plan: Couldn't even find Old Navy (at first) to exchange carol's pajama pants, REI had not re-stocked on the long-underwear I was looking for and somehow it took me 45 minutes to buy a simple set of headphones at the Apple store. As a result, I was too late to go on a New Years Day ride with Ryan, the ride I had talked him into doing.

But, I did get home and get my gear together pretty quickly (which is a bit of a trick really when its 13 degrees outside, lots of layers to put on). Had a great ride, pretty comfortable the whole time, but when its that cold your glasses can fog up just waiting at a stop light. In fact, I managed to frost them over when I stopped for a few seconds to take a photo of the sunset. But anyway, a good solid 30 mile ride in 2 hours on the fixie on sketchy roads on the first day of a new year.
