Jose has been heavily involved in the work of Compassion Australia, a national organisation that focuses on releasing children from poverty all around the world. This year 11 dropout became Senator in 1996 when Bob McMullan entered the Lower House. During opposition she had been Shadow Minister for: Information Technology, Manufacturing, Consumer Affairs, Local Government, Sport and Health Promotion; but was dropped from the front bench when Labor won government.
Kate was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Citizenship as well as Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and Cabinet as part of the original Second Gillard Ministry. In a subsequent reshuffle in March 2012, she made the Minister for Sport, Multicultural Affairs, and Minister Assisting the Minister for Industry and Innovation. On 1 July 2013, as part of the Second Rudd Ministry, Kate retained the portfolio of Multicultural Affairs and gained the portfolio of Minister Assisting for the Digital Economy. She has been highly active on the issue of internet regulation, arguing against both the Howard government's and her own party's policy in that area.
