A/N: This took me a while to write... my mind went blank... I apologize!
“H-Hyung,” Hyukjae has trouble breathing as he collapses into the other’s chest. “W-What do I do?”
The older pats Hyukjae’s back and thinks hard while the body is still trembling against him. The emergency room’s doors open and a nurse comes out, walking to the two immediately. Sungmin releases Hyukjae from his embrace and stands up facing her. They talk for a while before the nurse returns to the ER and Sungmin turns around to look at Hyukjae, who is still crying endlessly.
“Donghae’s phone didn’t get destroyed,” Sungmin informs him. “They’re going to bring it out right now. It just suffered a bad drop and the screen is cracked big time. I guess we’ll call one of his contacts or something and tell them what’s going on.”
“But Sungmin-hyung!” Hyukjae looks up at him with wet eyes. “They’re going to be so mad at me! What do I do? How do I even thank him?”
“You stay calm, okay?” Sungmin pats him on the head. “… And don’t let them see you crying like this. You have to go wash your face. I’m pretty sure I saw a bathroom down the hall.”
“Hyung, he almost killed himself to save me and I don’t know how I should thank him!” Hyukjae cries, bursting into tears again.
Sungmin groans. “I need to get back to work, Hyukkie. I’m going to be late if I don’t leave now. I don’t know… just give him something he’s always wanted.”
Sungmin dashes down the hallway and makes a swift turn, disappearing from Hyukjae’s sight. Hyukjae sighs and wipes his tears away as the nurse from earlier returns. She tells him that Donghae hasn’t suffered anything serious, but Hyukjae doesn’t understand why she said that because a minute later, she’s telling him that Donghae’s forehead is bleeding and that he is receiving stitches. Hyukjae thought that was it until she told him that he also had a broken arm. Hyukjae wants to cry again, but then the nurse hands him Donghae’s cell phone. He clutches it tightly until it could break any moment. The nurse walks down the hallway as Hyukjae hesitantly looks through the contacts. He reaches the name “Umma” and presses call. Hyukjae inhales deeply and presses the phone near his ear, waiting for someone to talk.
“How’s college, son?” Donghae’s mother asks right away.
“I’m sorry, this isn’t Donghae,” Hyukjae gulps and continues. “I’m his dorm mate, Lee Hyukjae.”
“Oh, hello, Hyukjae,” she says nervously. “May I ask why you have Donghae’s phone?”
“Donghae is in the hospital,” Hyukjae blurts out as fast as he can. “He… He got hit by a car.”
He hears Donghae’s mother scream and call someone’s name. Did she say Donghwa? He couldn’t hear well.
“It’s the hospital two blocks down from our school,” Hyukjae informs her and she tells him okay before hanging up.
Hyukjae runs to the bathroom to wash his face and comes back with his face a normal color instead of pink. He waits patiently until he sees a lady running down the hall as fast as her feet can take her. Following the lady is a guy about Donghae’s age, maybe a few years older. He assumes that it is Donghae’s mother and the Donghwa guy she called out on the phone. He inhales and exhales one last time before standing up and bowing politely.
“H-How did this happen?!” Donghae’s mother asks instantly, her face extremely worried.
“He saw me crossing the street and a car was speeding and coming my way…” Hyukjae tries to explain. “He… Donghae just ran and… I’m really sorry.”
“Don’t worry,” Donghwa speaks. “My little brother is always like this… caring for others more than himself…”
Hyukjae nods and gulps. The doors fling open again and a doctor exits the emergency room with a clipboard in his hands. Donghae’s mother and brother hurry to him, stopping the doctor in his tracks and throwing tons of questions out.
“Will he be okay?”
“Is he hurt badly?”
“Does he have amnesia?”
“Where is he now?”
“Does he need surgery?”
The doctor answers the questions one by one until there are too many and he tells them to cool down. Hyukjae stares at the doors and waits for them to open again. The next time they do, a bed on wheels is pushed out with an unconscious body lying on top of it.
“Donghae!” Hyukjae shouts, catching the other three’s attention.
“Son!”
They spend a few moments after that in a room with Donghae, but he doesn’t wake up. A nurse comes by later and calls Donghae’s mother and brother out, saying something about signing insurance papers. Hyukjae sits there alone, staring at the sleeping body and focusing on the closed eyes. He waits for them to open while thinking about Sungmin’s words.
Just give him something he’s always wanted.
Hyukjae thinks hard about it. What does Donghae want? What has Donghae always wanted? He spends minutes thinking and thinking until the idea strikes him.
Donghae has always wanted his love.
Maybe it was time to give it to Donghae. It would be the perfect gift, Hyukjae thinks. At that moment, Donghae’s fingers twitch and his eyes slowly open. Hyukjae catches the whole moment and stares at Donghae, who keeps observing everything around him. The boy tries to lift his right arm but fails and closes his eyes tightly from the pain. When he opens them again, he looks at Hyukjae and they both smile. Donghae is confused. Hyukjae has never grinned like that in front of him.
Then everything races back to his mind. The car, the sounds, Hyukjae’s scream, the flash… it all happened too fast. He hisses at the pain in his head and shuts his eyes again.
“A-Are you okay?” Hyukjae asks immediately. “Should I call the doctor?”
“I’m fine,” Donghae whispers almost inaudibly.
“Thank you so much, Donghae,” Hyukjae smiles at him and Donghae stares at him blankly, waiting to see if he would get anything else.
After a minute, he realizes that Hyukjae will say no more. He sighs. “Y-You’re welcome.”
“Donghae, you won.”
Donghae looks at Hyukjae, still puzzled. He stays silent and waits for something to happen.
And then Hyukjae’s lips brush against his lightly and Donghae waits to see if it is real or if it is just a dream. A pain in his forehead assures him that it is indeed real and that Hyukjae is really kissing him.
“Donghae, you won,” Hyukjae whispers, his face just an inch away from the other’s. “I love you.”
