Maybe this is because I haven't seen the Peck version of Hornblower, since that was the going thing in Hollywood at the time, IDK...
People constantly bring up the fact that TOS Kirk is based on Hornblower, right? I just don't see it. I see more of Bush in Kirk, the everyman ready to throw himself into any situation, to fight for his people and his objectives, the guy next door that you could hang out with, "For what we are about to receive...", you know, William Bush the awesome guy of epic awesomeness...That to me, is much more Captain Kirk...
I dunno, I just see Kirk radiating THAT vibe much more than reserved, emotionally stunted and immature, insecure, incredibly, incredibly fucked up, beautiful, intelligent, but oh so BROKEN Hornblower. If anything, aside from emotionally immature and stunted and insecure, looking at Hornblower...I find elements of Spock much more than Kirk.
This confuses me...
