Soooo I mentioned this ages ago, like years ago but I really do not like the phrase "what it means to be human"
I see it all over the place, in books, movies, museum exhibits, amazingly enough not in typical conversation....yet.
Now I know I have ranted about it but I don't think I have gone into nearly enough detail as to why I dislike it.
The main reason is because it makes it sound like there is something, that makes us different, more special, or even above animals. And I strongly believe when it comes down to it there isn't. We are still animals. And I don't mean the sense where it is an insult i mean by definition we are animals, I don't mean it as an insult, or that we are all idiots or whatever, I mean some people are idiots but that is another conversation for another day. Animals adapt for different niches, and while I could argue that humans are creating their own niches and messing up nature the point is we should stop seeing ourselves outside of nature. Its one of the reasons I hate the idea of going into space and colonizing the moon or whatever.
I see that as a run away tactic, as we screwed up Earth let's go try it on another planet. And that bothers me. I feel that we should work to preserve nature, because this is the only Earth and it is amazing that all the right conditions have come together in just a way to create it. So let's no ruin it, let's not think we are the rulers of Earth, the one species above everyone else or whatever.
Let's see ourselves as part of a community.
Now I realize that I am writing this on Earth Day and it is mid-April and it is snowing outside and that weirds me out and I am sure people hear 'save the Earth' messages all the time. I sure do, but I spend 2 days a week at a zoo. This is not really a 'Save the Earth' message. This is a 'change your thinking message' because I don't know about you but saving the Earth is a really hard and overwhelming thing to do, especially when you have things like oil spills and republicans in your way. What I am asking you to do is change your thinking because that is something you can do. Instead of focusing on people and how they are different, let's focus on animals, and how we are the same and how we can help our fellow animal neighbors out. Maybe that means not letting your cats outside because they eat songbirds, or not littering because you wouldn't want people chucking trash in your backyard, or go to the library and learning about some local or exotic wildlife. (its like getting to know your human neighbors, but they don't have books written about them that you can read instead of asking them awkward questions! unless your neighbors are famous people...)
So yeah. Happy Earth Day and I hope it stops snowing soon..
