Did this guy ever go to class?
In addition to the cards and the role-playing, this was about the stage where I was spending some quality time on MUDDs. I managed to hook my roommate on them as well and we would occasionally go out in a sort of team.
Another game I got him hooked on was Nethack. ASCII crack, it is and still going strong today. I could easily lose a few hours to the game still if I am not careful. It is this game which leads us to...
Zaph: "So, what's this?"
Me: "It's Nethack. It is like a D&D game."
Zaph: "Haven't you been playing that for a couple hours now?"
Me: "Yeah.... what of it?"
Zaph: "What exactly is it that you are doing?"
Me: "Well, see... I'm this guy here and if you look, I am about to attack a baby red dragon over there."
Zaph: "No. You are just moving a little ampersand over to that 'd' there."
Me: "Yeah. That's a baby dragon."
Zaph (chuckling): "No man, that's a just a 'd'."
Me: "But, but, it represents a dragon."
Zaph: "Whatever you say, Fish... why don't you stop playing that game and do something with, oh, actual people instead of symbols on a keyboard?"
One of the many reasons I highly regard the man. When I first told him about Everquest years later, he told me never to buy it because I would disappear forever.
