Alan Turing (1912-1954) is considered the father of modern computer science. He developed the concept of artificial intelligence, and the universal Turing machine. Moreover, he devised the Turing test to determine if an artificial agent is intelligent.
In 1952 he was convicted of gross indecency after admitting to having had an affair with another man, and was ordered to undergo hormone treatments. This left him so depressed that in 1954 he killed himself by eating an apple laced with cyanide.
