IS UTHER REALLY DEAD? WAS THAT IT? WAS THAT FUCKING IT? WHAT THE FUCK? There was absolutely no emotion to his death. Like, at all. The death itself was so lame. All the havoc that Uther has caused, all the recurring and main characters who have wanted to kill Uther over the years, and he dies by a stab wound from a CARNY? Seriously? Okay, I get that the show was at least trying to give Uther a noble death, but, as much as I love Uther, he didn't deserve to die a noble death. It was supposed to be pathetic and painful and dramatic, and MORGANA WAS SUPPOSED TO DO IT FACE TO FACE, DAMN IT! SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO WITNESS HIS SUFFERING. But, in the end, his death was rather quiet and only served to turn Arthur against magic once and for all. It was a dramatic moment for Arthur and Merlin, but it was not the emotional send-off for Uther that I had yearned for. But, like Gaius said, I suppose that Uther's real death happened when Morgana broke his heart. He's been there this season, but not really there, so it was like he had already left. But... goddamn it, I loved that dude! So very much! *sniff* I just wanted more dramatic resonance in his death, you know? Something that was about Uther and not about Arthur. Something that made Uther face all of his wrongdoings. As broken up as he was about Morgana, he still didn't seem to see the reason why Morgana did what she did. And so he dies heroically saving Arthur's life but never truly redeeming himself (not that redemption was even possible for Uther, but if he could actually admit his sins, at least he would have learned something). The show did throw me a little bone with Morgana shivering in bed and being sad about Uther's death, but that was just not enough. I wanted more. I wanted more Uther/Morgana symbolicness, okay? I admit it. That's what this rant is really about.
Anyway, the episode itself was quite good, and Merlin/Arthur continue to be as delightful as they were in season 1, so that's always a plus. But yeah, I wanted more Uther/Morgana. And now Morgana's insanity no longer makes sense, because a lot of her motivation in this whole steal the crown plot was about getting back at Uther. It was also about bonding with her sister. Now both Uther and Morgause are gone, so... what is even in it for Morgana anymore? It stopped being about equal rights for her a LONG time ago. I don't know, man, I don't know. I think the show did a good job in maturing Arthur and Merlin and setting up the conflict for their future, but it is still floundering where Morgana is concerned.
So, Lancelot is gone, and so is Uther, and so is Uther/Morgana. WHAT AM I EVEN SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THIS SHOW NOW?
