I think we've all experienced our own ballet today. A ballet of emotions.
Okay, got a chance to see The Other Guys today, and felt the need to review. It has been too damn long since I've enjoyed a Will Ferrell movie this much.
The film started out very, very strong with Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock and the way it mocked your typical buddy cop films where they pointlessly crash into things and drive through buildings and are badass all around, but what really got me was that they did all this craziness to nab a marijuana dealer. OMG. And then of course the "aim for the shrubs" scene. I LAUGHED SO FREAKING HARD. Oh god, it was so ridiculous. Also, the line, "I'm a peacock, you gotta let me fly" never failed to make me giggle. And Gamble totally pwning Hoitz during the whole tuna vs lion conversation was awesome. AND GAMBLE WITH HIS WOODEN GUN. And every woman being totally into Gamble (I told you all that Will Ferrell is sexy! Yeah, I'm looking at you, Bunny, even though you've disappeared from LiveJournal). Hoitz shooting Derek Jeter because he was carrying a "deadly weapon"! Hobos having an orgy in Gamble's car! PIMPS DON'T CRY. The annoying Lethal Weapon saxophone music! The captain obliviously making outdated references to TLC! Oh, I loved it.
But, as most Adam McKay films go, the movie dragged in the middle. Like, once it started actually focusing on the plot, it really did become a buddy cop film rather than a parody of a buddy cop film, and it got a little boring there. I did love though that it kind of went against convention by making the straight-laced one the one who continued working on the case after they were demoted (and I loved that Hoitz actually enjoyed being a traffic cop).
Anyway, I was reading this review that talked about how men and women don't laugh at the same things, and I got to this bit at the end that I think sums up the film pretty well:
Is it is supposed to be funny that a pair of over-the-top macho cops leap to their death because they are too stupid to realize it will kill them? Is it funny that Will Ferrell plays a desk jockey nerd that gorgeous women find irresistible for no discernable reason? Is it funny that Mark Wahlberg wants to be a macho cop but is stuck with Ferrell’s desk jockey because he was demoted when he shot Derek Jeter?
My answer is yes, yes it is. AND I'M A LADY.
So, yeah, best comedy I've seen in awhile, but still does not measure up to Anchorman.
