She gave me: A Faux Talk Show In A World Where Vampires Are Out Of The Coffin
Title: Second Chance (ugh, I fail at titles)
Summary: An aging late night talk show host is having trouble coming to terms with the fact that his ratings are slipping and the network execs are aching to replace him with a vampire. On top of this, his ex wife is still ever present in his life and basking in his every failure. When Malcolm's new boss arrives, he's sure the young woman will be his death knell, in one way or another.
Malcolm Avery (Anthony Stewart Head)
He comes from the school of Jack Benny and Johnny Carson, a style that is slowly being phased out as the networks try to appeal to the younger generation. He's got a sharp tongue and a quick wit and indulges in alcohol just a little too much. It's widely known around the studio that he often seduces the young interns. *coughDavidLetterman* His ex wife is the bane of his existence, and he has a strained relationship with his daughter. He was the shining star of the network, a living legend, but just as his ratings start to noticeably decline, the network brings in a new Head of Entertainment, and Malcolm discovers that his days are numbered.
Olivia MacDonnell (Katie McGrath)
The new Head of Entertainment. She knows that Malcolm is used to being treated like a king, but she's not having any of that. She knows of his philandering ways and has already concluded that he's a giant sleaze ball past his prime. She carries herself with a confidence that is not usually seen in a woman her age and a sort of graceful determination, having little patience for opinions that she deems useless. She's a hardass and she makes no apologies for this. No one is quite sure of her past, and most would swear that she was born in another century (which she was. She's a vampire, but shhhh! Nobody knows yet). She can match Malcolm wit for wit, and she fully intends on firing him by the end of her first week, but by the end of the pilot episode she sees something in him, and against her better judgment, she decides to give him another chance (and actually ends up fighting to keep him, much to the network's chagrin).
Joan Avery (Judith Light)
Malcolm's ex-wife. She's the daughter of a big time producer who was responsible for giving Malcolm his big break (her father is now deceased). Malcolm and Joan married young and were at one time very much in love, but years of bitter resentment and adultery tore them apart. They both had big dreams, but they were supposed to accomplish them together, and Malcolm never quite realized just how much Joan did for him until she wasn't his anymore. Their interactions now mostly consist of insults and Joan delighting in Malcolm's every misfortune, but every now and then, in moments where they really need each other and come through for each other, they both get melancholy about the way things could have been, the way things should have been, and... then they end up fighting and there is overly dramatic slamming of doors and acting like children.
Elizabeth Avery (Maggie Lawson)
Yes, I am totally making Malcolm's daughter older than his love interest/boss, but not really, because his love interest/boss is a 200 year old vampire. Anyway, Elizabeth always felt neglected by her father, like he cared more about his job than he did her. She always had to fade into the background when they'd be out together and people would come up and ask him for his autograph, and Malcolm, being the lovely attention whore that he is, would never pass up signing an autograph. She blames him for her parents' divorce. Despite this, she still gets together with her father once a week for dinner where he tries to make up for everything that he missed during her childhood and she tries to not resent him. She's a high school math teacher and Malcolm just does not understand that at all, and often voices these thoughts.
Scott Turner (Tim Omundson)
Elizabeth's fiance, and the principal of the school where she works. Malcolm so does not approve.
Henrik Clausen (Garret Dillahunt)
He's the head vampire of the clan that Olivia answers to/used to live with. Henrik was her maker, and because of this he has a strong hold over her. Crazy hot tension, and yes, they used to have wildly hot sex together. But Henrik is a dangerous vampire. He wants power. He enjoys torturing humans (and vampires) for no real reason. He has a deadly calm about him that is just plain creepy. He's a strategist, and he's currently trying to infiltrate the biggest industries in America, and television just happens to be his central focus because he believes it will make humans trust the vampires implicitly. He believes that Olivia is working for him, but throughout the first season he starts to suspect that her loyalties lie elsewhere. But he knows her weaknesses. (cue cliffhanger of Malcolm chained in a basement, unconscious and bleeding)
Saul Solomon (Larry David)
Malcolm's producer. He's all curmudgeonly and put-upon (naturally) and threatens to leave Malcolm every day, but Malcolm knows that Saul totally loves him with all his heart. They'd do anything for each other.
There would be a whole slew of recurring cast members for interns and the crew and the vampire clans, and of course Malcolm would have people that he interviews (vampires keep getting booked on the show). And of course there would be a hot young thing cast as a male vampire that the network really wants to replace Malcolm with, but ever since Olivia started working with Malcolm his ratings started creeping up and eventually become better than ever. Olivia and Malcolm have a completely slow-burn romance, where at first they hate each other, then they become work buddies, then they become best friends, and most of their romance will happen in the subtext, but they would also have these subtle moments of UST because it's Tony and Katie and that's just what they do, and Malcolm will be totally jealous of Henrik but deny it and Olivia will be totally jealous of his lingering love for Joan but totally deny it, and people will argue and argue about whether there's actually a romance there and the Olivia/Henrik shippers will totally bully the Malcolm/Olivia shippers and the Malcolm/Joan shippers will just be like, "La di da, we're awesome, we won't get involved in that insanity," and then the Malcolm/Saul shippers will be like, "Ugh, this fandom is so ageist! Why don't more people ship these two?" and the Malcolm/Henrik shippers will just be having all kinds of kinky fun. OH, SHOW! WHY DON'T YOU EXIST?
I think I got way too carried away there.
