OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! I think that sufficiently sums up my thoughts on this episode. SO FREAKING AMAZING! I LOVED IT! Now, it certainly had its faults, but conversations about Back to the Future and Marshall saying "shuttlecock" was more than enough to make up for them.
- We start off with an awesome intro to the witnesses. I love this show for getting some truly wonderful character actors for their guest stars. Chris and Scott were wonderful, and just from this little blurb at the beginning we can see that Scott is a good guy trying to raise his brother the best way he knows how. Also, I love that these two were Mary's very first witnesses. If her first witnesses had been scumbags, would she still love her work so much? She probably loved that she got to be a part of giving these two kids a better life.
- And then we get some lovin' going on with Mary and Marshall's vehicles:
I adore how their vehicles match them so well, and seeing them together like this just makes me squee, because I am that pathetic. But there's Mary's car, all rebellious and a total mess, steaming up the road, and then there's Marshall's car right behind her, strong, dependable, sleek, and just going wherever Mary's car is going, giving her enough room to do her own thing, but right there to pick her up if she falls apart. And the window rolling up in response to the smoke was a lovely piece of snark. OMG, I SHIP THEIR CARS! WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?
- They pull into the car shop, and it's run by Scott, and this is where we find out that Mary was their marshal. And Scott talks to Marshall about Mary like she's Marshall's wife, which makes me love him even more. And Marshall replies, "She doesn't speak sense," and we get this look that makes me all wibbly:
And they get invited to Chris' basketball game. And they go together. Because the tickets were free. And because Mary doesn't want to do anything social without her husband. THEY ARE MARRIED, OKAY? EVEN THE WITNESS SEES THIS!
- Marshall says "shuttlecock." *snickers*
HE SAID SHUTTLECOCK! AND MARY LOVES HIM FOR IT! Gah, this little exchange was so freaking adorable. I love that Mary calling him a jackass is so squee-worthy and elicits an adoring look from her to Marshall. And Marshall is quite pleased with himself for amusing Mary.
Then we meet Marshall's old Professor Lady. And Mary is extremely jealous over the fact that his FULL ATTENTION is on someone other than her. It was like she wasn't even in the room.
Oh, strained smile, how I adore thee. She really cannot believe that someone can distract Marshall from her so thoroughly. This adds to my theory that Mary is fully aware of Marshall's feelings for her, and she's miffed that his devotion isn't quite as intense as she had perceived it to be.
She also finds it weird to have someone see Marshall in a sexual light. To her he's just Marshall. Goofy, sweet, annoying Marshall. But when faced with having to look at him through another's eyes, it disturbs her. He's her Marshall. To know that he could belong to someone else if he chose to probably frightens her. But she is always SO self-involved that she tends to forget that he has a life outside of her.
Pah, trying to hide her jealousy by teasing Marshall. SHE CAN'T FOOL ME! HA!
Especially when she VERY possessively grabs his arm (she's totally feeling him up, by the way) and then puts her arm on his back to steer him to the gym (it almost looks like she's doing the Vulcan Neck Pinch). I love the reversal of the traditional gender roles here. Mary is so the man.
- And then they have to look all... couple-ish at the basketball game and make me swoon:
GAH! Look how she's leaning into him! I love how natural they look with each other during the bleacher scenes. I know they're partners and all, but it's lovely to see them enjoying each other's company outside of work, and instead of being told that they're best friends, we're being shown that they're best friends. I love that!
Then Marshall starts having eyesex with Professor Lady, and OMG!!!! *swoon*
And he looks over at Mary to see if she cares... or even notices, which she doesn't. If she had, she would have been making fun of him. But I love his little glance at her, and I'm not quite sure why. I guess because it felt like he wouldn't have gone if Mary had protested, but since she seemed fine, he went for the sex (which, come on, can you really blame him? Mary's not giving him any, so...)
HELLO!
Mary is disappointed in his non-professionalism and the fact that he left her for... that woman, but she's also kind of intrigued. You know she is.
- Jinx gets a letter from the FBI saying that they are going to declare Mary's missing father as dead. This is the very first time where I've actually enjoyed Jinx. She actually held significance in this episode, and she even got some character development. Brandi's reaction in this scene is pretty interesting. She seems so distant from Mary and Jinx in regards to her father, and it makes me wonder if she even remembers him, or if she felt like he only loved Mary.
- Mary is very curious about what type of kisser Professor Lady is.
I'll translate the choices that she gives him:
Sweet - You'll make me want to puke with your cuteness, but it'll never last, because she's not feisty enough for you.
Yearning - Trouble. It means she's into you, and you'd probably dig being yearned.
Tongue down your throat give it to me big daddy - Just a fling that I can mock endlessly.
Marshall refuses to divulge information, because HE KNOWS that she will mock him endlessly (because, as we later find out, it's completely of the Tongue Down Your Throat Give it to Me Big Daddy variety). Then she deflects Stan's attention away from herself by spilling the beans about Marshall and Professor Lady:
What the hell?
Psh, you should have told me how Professor Lady kisses.
This is also the scene where we find out that Chris and Scott were Mary's first witnesses, and it's Marshall who says this, which means that Mary shared it with him at some point, since they've only known each other for 3 years, and she talked about knowing Scott and Chris 5 years ago (which is confusing, because the beginning said 10 years ago, so how come Mary got them when they were 5 years into the program???).
- Mary finds out that Chris was trying to get money from her for gambling debts.
And then she sees Marshall going to meet Professor Lady on his lunch break, and he's being all Marshall-ish with his breath spray and his quick, nervous walk.
And Mary looks at him with mischief in her eyes. (I sound like a children's book now. But it's true.)
AND THEN WE GET MORE ARM FONDLING, OMG!!!!!
ADORING LOOKS AND GETTING IN EACH OTHER'S PERSONAL SPACES! OMG! Seriously, the adoring looks from Mary to Marshall were through the roof last night. I think I get more excited over her adoring looks than I do Marshall's. I guess because we get affirmation of Marshall's love for her quite frequently, whereas Mary is rarely shown appreciating Marshall, and her [platonic] love really shines through in this episode.
Oh, and that Chris dude gets rough housed by some bookies and then he faints.
- Mary tries to solve Chris' gambling problems, but she can't. And Scott gives him a check.
- We find out that Mary was Daddy's Little Girl. Her dad had a major gambling problem, her mom dealt with it by drinking. Once again Jinx totally owns her scenes.
- Marshall is on a date with Professor Lady and is trying to be all artistic and impress her with his extensive knowledge of... something, and she's not listening to a word, she's just staring into his beautiful eyes.
Then Marshall had to stare into his beautiful eyes too. They are too hard to resist.
BATHROOM SEX!!! FRENCH! MARSHALL!!!!!!! OMGOMGOMG!!!!!!!! *dies* Now, I've seen some people (or... just
fatherleary) being angry about seeing Marshall with someone other than Mary. Now, if he was serious about someone other than Mary, then I probably wouldn't be a happy camper, but as long as it's just a fling, I say bring it on! Especially when it results in French bathroom sex. PLUS, seeing Marshall stray from Mary made his return to her so incredibly satisfying. But I'll get to that later.
- And then we get to the gambler anon meeting. Blech. Sorry, I know some people really enjoyed this scene, but it was just so heavy handed, and the ridiculously long montage with Mary making this face through the entire thing:
Gained laughter out of me instead of sympathy. Just... blerg. The montage was Cheese City. I think Mary's breakdown was well played, but I just didn't like how they led up to it. Having seen the ending, I get why she didn't have her revelation from sharing her own story, but I think it would have been better had it not been played up so dramatically. Maybe have 1 person tell their story, then get to Mary and she starts to share something, then breaks down when she reaches the revelation of how much her father's gambling had affected her, then for the end, they could have still had her tell them the story that she did, and then that bit would have felt more natural to me too. Anyway, this scene went way too overkill on the drama without building it up properly, which resulted in cheesy over-dramaticness. Mary McCormack sold the scene as much as she could, but the writing was just too weak there for me.
- Mary convinces Scott to not help Chris, and much drama ensues. This was good drama though, not cheesy. Like I said before, the guest actors for the witnesses were AMAZING. I loved them, and they played all these scenes beautifully.
- Mary decides to have a talk with Chris's bookie. But first:
MORE SHOULDER GROPING! OMG! She cannot keep her hands off of him.
Anyway, they go to the bookie trying to be all badass:
But Marshall keeps interrupting Mary. And they're kind of pathetic at being intimidating, which just adds to their adorableness. This bookie dude is really creepy and lives up to his Dohmer name. And he says that Chris's debts are settled, and Mary actually believes it's because she managed to scare him. Bwahahahaha. Oh, Mary.
- THEY EAT LUNCH TOGETHER!!!!!
Marshall has naughty fantasies about Mary as she slurps her drink.
Then he has nerdgasms over Back to the Future and Mary gets a headache.
And then Marshall has some more naughty fantasies when he sees Mary's hair all messed up and her looking COMPLETELY SPENT! It was all the nerdgasms that he gave her.
Lots of dramatic gesticulating and leaning into each other as Mary fails to realize the point of Marshall's Back to the Future story.
AND THEN MARSHALL EATS OUT OF HER PLATE!!!!!! A very intimate thing to do. Especially since he did it without thinking. It was a very natural thing for them, like they share their food with each other all the time. I shouldn't be this excited over that, but I am. Anyway, Mary finally gets what Marshall was trying to tell her about the point shaving, and he says:
"And everybody thinks you're just a pretty face."
"Really?"
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE SQUEE SQUEE SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! This, my friends, was full on flirting, Mary/Marshall style. This was such a fluffy, adorable conversation for them, and ending it with that smile was absolute perfection. And I love how he giggles at her being proud of the fact that people think she's just a pretty face. SO ADORABLE! That giggle? That was an "I'm in love with you, Mary," giggle. It was. Really.
- Mary greatly enjoys being in the men's locker room.
Marshall ain't so happy when this kid looks down Mary's shirt.
Of course, that doesn't stop him from taking a peek himself. Look how much happier he is there. By the way, I adore his subtle possessiveness of her here. A great contrast to the way Mary handles people looking at Marshall in a sexual way. Marshall expects people to go gaga over Mary, whereas Mary refuses to see Marshall in a sexual light, and yet she doesn't really want anyone else to have him. Marshall quietly pines for Mary, but he's perfectly okay with her dating other people. He's all about what she wants, and... Mary is also all about what she wants. If Marshall ever gets a real girlfriend, Mary will be a mess of confusion. Anyway, I got way off track there. Back to Mary, Marshall, and the locker room:
Marshall flirts with her some more as he tells her that the kid was looking down her shirt. Mary is thrown off by all his niceness. Also, MARSHALL WITH HIS HANDS IN HIS POCKETS, OMG!!!! *clears throat* So, why is Marshall being so flirty? Because being around crazy Professor Lady made him realize how wrong he feels with anyone that isn't Mary.
"Okay, but you better not be all wet when I get back." Oh, the innuendo. The unintentional double entendre! MARSHALL THINKING OF MARY BEING ALL WET!!!!!
So, Mary has a heart to heart with Chris. It's very After School Special-ish.
- THE CELL PHONE SCENE OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!! The cuteness killed me. If anything, this ep convinced me that Mary is harboring some very unrealized feelings for Marshall. Hopefully they will stay unrealized for a very long time. And hopefully the show will keep giving us these deliciously fluffy moments between Mary and Marshall. Anyway:
Marshall pulls out his cell phone and makes a very obvious show over the text message that Professor Lady sent to him. He wanted Mary to ask to see it. And I love that Mary can't resist the temptation.
For some reason, he wanted her to see the crazy. Maybe so that he'd have someone to mock Professor Lady with? Maybe because he was feeling guilty and wanted Mary to know that no one fits him like she does? Maybe because he was testing her to see if she's just as adventurous? Maybe because he wanted Mary to know that he's a stud in the bedroom? I don't know, but I love that he felt the need to share it with her.
And Mary's utter delight at having Marshall all to herself again was a beautiful thing to see. Seriously, she is looking at him with so much love here. She adores his kookiness and his humor and the fact that he's not a guy who digs over-adventurous women.
And oh, how she loves that Professor Lady scares Marshall.
Then they have the most adorable grab fight for the cell phone.
"Really, you're that flexible?" Wouldn't you like to know, Mary? Wouldn't you like to know.
- Mary figures out that Dohmer has abducted Scott.
- Marshall and Stan are at the station trying to find Scott. Stan is baffled as to why Mary is still involved with these witnesses, it doesn't make sense, and Marshall says, "Sure it does. Mary doesn't let go of anything." Yet another moment of Marshall knowing Mary better than anyone. Also, he's a sexy badass lawman:
- Lots of dramatic basketball scenes. Think Teen Wolf. Chris wins, natch.
- Marshall gets Scott to the arena and there's a big happy reunion and everyone's peachy. And Marshall is still a badass lawman:
- It's all connected. Wait... wrong show. Eh, Charlie Crews' s zen philosophy works here too. Mary reconnected with her witnesses who had gambling problems, her gambling father was declared dead, she realized how her father and his addiction ended up defining her, and she had yet another breakdown, this time in public. Her story was wonderful, but... again, the over-dramaticness of it all elicited giggles out of me instead of tears. The drama shouldn't be so forced. Blerg.
So, other than the over-dramatic gambler's anon meeting scenes, I thought that this ep was perfection. So much Mary/Marshall fluff that I am STILL on cloud 9. Wonderful, wonderful episode.
