Meme! Meme meme meme! And some random rambling...

Sep 11, 2008 01:48

My mom, who was offered today off and took it because she wanted to do her schoolwork, spent the entire afternoon watching some Dateline thing about "My Last Lecture" and that professor guy that died of pancreatic cancer, and she was literally weeping when I went downstairs for my lunch, and I asked her what she was watching, and she said, "My last lecture," which I took to mean as her school lecture, which baffled me as to why she was crying. But it wasn't her school lecture. But she went on to talk about the professor having cancer and I was like, "Wow, you know that about your online teacher???" *sigh* Anyway, she watched the Dateline special on ABC.com, then she spent the rest of the afternoon watching his actual lecture on YouTube (a site that she couldn't figure out how to get to, by the way, because she kept spelling it as utube. Bwahahahaha). Anyway, her face and eyes are all red and she's sniffling every five seconds. All the while she's saying that she's supposed to be reading and she should have gone shopping, etc. I think I know where I get my procrastination from. Hee. I did the grocery shopping though. I actually think it was just her way of saying, "Oy! Go to the store already!" So I did. And I haven't done any schoolwork. I am definitely my mother's daughter. Although my assignment was to search for a job opening in my area that I'd be qualified for once I get my certificate, and there are absolutely no entry level coding jobs within 40 miles of my house. WHAT THE FREAKING HELL? I signed up for this damn course so that I'd have an easy time of getting a job. 10 months ago both hospitals had a ton of openings. Now neither of them do. BAH! I did see an opening at UVA for the child care, so I suppose I could apply for that, but I'm supposed to get my coursework done, which I never would if I got a job at the university daycare from 6:30am to 6:00pm. I'd probably come home and go straight to sleep. But I'm thinking about applying. I don't know. My parents didn't seem too thrilled about it when I mentioned it to them, and yet my dad is always on my back about not having a full time job yet. *siiiiiigh* I don't know. Do I really want to go back into childcare? Would they even hire me? Probably not. Nobody ever hires me. Because I suck at interviews no matter how many hours I spend preparing for them. But I need those health benefits... Bah! I don't know.

Is it weird that I never liked Hootie until he left the Blowfish and put some twang into his background music? Probably. But it's a lovely song. I remember the first time I heard it I knew that I knew the voice, but for the life of me I couldn't figure it out. And then the radio person was like, "That's Darius Rucker with blah blah..." and I was like, "OMG, HOOTIE! NO WAY!" I really want to hear the rest of his album. Hey, wait, is that that Jared Padelsomethingrather from Supernatural/Gilmore Girls? Or just a lookalike? Hmm... he looks too pretty, probably not him.

Okay, MEME TIME!

toxic_corn gave me L. Hmm...

1. Lassiter, Carlton - Psych. Also known as Lassi, which Pieces hates. So I'll say it again. LASSI!!! He totally counts. Juliet is the only one that calls him Carlton on a regular basis.

Oh good lord! *fans self* Sexy, sexy, obtuse man with tall hair! I love him!!! He's a total ass, desperately wants to be the best at everything he does and he thinks if he acts like he is then he will be, but... obviously that's not the case. His misfortune brings the audience much laughter, and I love him for that. Juliet brings out his softer side, which he is completely unaware of, and he is in so much awe of her kickassity that he's pretty much quietly in love with her. She reminds him of a young version of himself, which leads me to believe that he wasn't always such a hardass. I bet deep down inside he loves kittens and rainbows just as much as Juliet does. But he loves guns more. And he loves showing off his abilities to Juliet, and she loves showing off her abilities to him, and they're pretty evenly matched (although, Juliet is a tad more talented than him, but she's the one person where he doesn't mind that so much. Especially since he's her mentor, which means he gets to take the credit for teaching her everything she knows. But it's mostly because he loooooooooves her).

2. Liz Lemon - 30 Rock

Oh, Liz Lemon is only one of the greatest female television characters in forever. She rules. She's a total mess, a complete nerd, she doesn't really think before she speaks, she tapes her bra together because she's too lazy to get a not-broken bra, she loves food, there's often lettuce in her hair, she wants to make everyone happy but she also wants everyone to do what she wants them to do and has trouble understanding why people are the way they are, she's charmingly witty, she has a good heart, she's strong despite her numerous flaws, she's a successful comedic TV writer and everyone depends on her for everything, she scarfed down a teamster sub for Floyd, she's positively adorable when she dances, she has shark-like eyes, she's left-handed, and she's just pure awesomeness. She is the closest I've ever come to really being that female character. There are tons of male characters on TV that I relate to, because guys are allowed to be bumbling dweebs who are socially awkward, but the women are always gorgeous and classy and they can pick up men in a heartbeat. That's so not me. But Liz, with all her awkwardness and laziness, that's me. And what I love about Liz is that she doesn't need to be glamorous. Her wit captures everyone's attention, and her brilliance with finding the irony in everything is what makes her so great at her job. She accepts all the crazy around her and she's not afraid to be a part of it. And she can be gorgeous and glamorous when she wants to put forth the effort. And Jack loves her for every single one of these reasons. He's so smitten, there's no question anymore. He had no chance of resisting, really. I don't care if it never gets acknowledged on the show (well, okay, maybe a little), but I'm pretty positive he's gobsmacked in love with her. I really can't blame him.

3. Lorelai Gilmore - Gilmore Girls

Another female character made of pure awesome. She's witty, fast-talking, feisty, charming, resourceful, her daughter means absolutely everything to her, she has so much strength and independence that she has trouble letting other people take care of her, she was a bit obtuse at times especially in regards to Luke, she had both mommy and daddy issues but she loved them like crazy (and wanted to strangle them at the same time), she broke a lot of hearts, she got her heart broken a few times, she achieved her dream of owning her own inn, did I mention that she raised a kid from the time she was 16 all on her own? Yeah, she was pretty dang awesome. I loved her.

4. Landry Clarke - Friday Night Lights

So... apparently, during the strike, I developed a thing for red-heads. Because I fell in love with Landry, and then right after that I fell in mad love with Damian. Anyway, while all the other girls are swooning over Riggins, I'd much rather get me some sweet Landry. He's adorable, he's witty, he's a nerd, he's sweet as sweet can be, he has an all-encompassing love for Tyra that happens to bring out the best and worst in him, because he's such a sweet guy he tends to get mistreated by the object of his affection (Tyra) and his best friend (Matt). He knows who he is and he doesn't apologize for it, nor does he believe himself to be better than anyone else. He's finding things out about himself that he didn't know were there, and through all his mistakes he takes full responsibility, unlike the majority of the characters on this show. I could have done without the whole murdering of the rapist storyline, but it gave Landry more screen time, so... meh. But this again reinforced his belief that no one is better than anyone else, because he was ready to go to prison for murder. He took a life, so in his mind, he deserved to be punished. But it was self defense, and his daddy is a police officer, so he got off scott free, but naturally he's all dark and broody now. So not sure where they'll take him next season. I like my fun-loving, adorable Landry, not the "OMG, I MURDERED SOMEONE, TYRA!" Landry. And I hate that Tyra didn't really like him sexually until she saw him murder somebody. That's just... messed up. And Landry went and broke that other girl's heart, and that poor girl was into him the way that he deserved, but he's just too in love with Tyra. And their love kind of kills me.

5. Little John - Robin Hood

Oooooh, how I adore Little John. SO HARD! He's big and burly and all "Arrrrrrrrgh" but in actuality he's a pretty deep guy. A man of few words, but they're always important. He seems to understand people better than any of the other characters on the show. And he's got a huge heart and he's so very gentle and loving. But he's also got a broken heart, because he had to let go of his family, and he died a little inside as he watched his wife and son go off with another man. :'( He's loyal to Robin, does absolutely everything he says, pretty much sees Robin as a god. This kind of makes me die a little inside because... ick. Robin is such a douche. But, I guess many leaders are. Anyway, Little John speaks to my soul. I feel so much for him. It's all in the facial expressions. Subtle acting always gets me, so it's only natural that I adore him so much. Oh, by the way, he totally kicks ass. And he can break through doors and walls, and if you get him angry enough, he'll find the strength to break the chains on his shackles if he's imprisoned. Little John is the real hero of the show, not Douchen Hood.

1. Colin Firth

Okay Grim, you totally rule for picking Colin on his birthday. &hearts So, just in case it isn't obvious, Colin is my namesake. I was super obsessed with him about 2 years ago, even had my own Colin Firth message board (which sadly closed shop on Monday because I got too lazy to keep up with it). Anywho, I first came into contact with this lovely specimen when I saw Bridget Jones' Diary, and I drooled through entire movie. Even during the Hugh Grant bits, because I was too busy being in awe of His Firthness to be bothered by that Hugh fellow. But I didn't become obsessed until I saw Pride and Prejudice. Then I was a goner. Ooooooh, how he made me all tingly. Colin is all about subtlety, and that's what I love most about him. He can say so much with just a look or a gesture. Gah, I love him! So, yeah, leading man Colin is pretty hot, but I think I love him even more as Vince Collins from Where the Truth Lies:

Mmmmm. Slightly psychopathic, madly in love with his best friend without being completely obvious about it, he gets nekkid, he rubs his finger very sensually over his scotch glass, he's a dick but you still feel for him in the end, did I mention how freaking hot he is when he beats the crap out of that guy that insults Lanny? Because he's ridiculously hot there.

Oh yeah baby. Ooo. Ouch! *dreamy sigh*

Also, And When Did You Last See Your Father, Colin was amazing, particularly at the end. I bawled like a baby. Actually, I've watched it three times and I seem to cry harder every time. Oh, and Nanny McPhee! Good gracious, I used to watch that three times a day back when I had first gotten the DVD (imported of course, because I couldn't wait for the American release). I love it when Colin isn't afraid to look like a fool. He does comedy marvelously, and it's usually him making fun of himself. So adorable. Mamma Mia is a great example of this (I don't rec the film though, because it was a horrifying experience, but Colin was awesome, so I guess it's worth it just to see him). Oh, and you all MUST see Fever Pitch (the Colin Firth version, not the crummy Jimmy Fallon version). Colin is so indescribably adorable in that film, definitely one of my top favorites. Oh, and Valmont is another must, especially if you like dark Colin.

2. Veronica Mars

This show was so incredibly awesome. I miss it terribly. I started watching around about the fifth episode in season 1 and got completely addicted. It was just so different from your typical teen drama. It had a mystery to solve every ep, plus an ongoing mystery, plus all that yummy teen angst that we all love, not to mention rich kids. And Weevil. It had my lovely Weevil. And I adored Veronica's father, and it was just so awesome to see a well-developed adult character in a show that was all about the teens, and the father/daughter relationship was so beautiful to watch. And I loved the roller coaster that was Veronica/Logan even though I shipped Veronica/Weevil (which I knew would never happen, so I didn't get my heart set on it), and I loved Veronica for being so kickass and snarky, and yeah, the show was a little ridiculous with its drama, but I loved every bit of it. Season 3 was a little weird, took awhile for me to get into it, but right when I did, the show disappeared. :'( So not fair. Anyway, seasons 1 and 2 were absolutely amazing, and if you want your socks to be rocked, check out this show.

3. Martial Arts Films

I'm addicted. I'll pretty much watch anything that has martial arts in it, but my favorites are Jackie Chan and Jet Li. But I'm so pathetic that I'll even catch myself watching Steven Seagal, which is just... blerg. He's so not cool. I even like Jean Claude Van Damme better than Steven. I mean...

Seriously? Steven Seagal? This is my dad's martial artist of choice. *sigh*

Here's where the awesome is at:

I love Jackie Chan the best because he doesn't take the art so seriously, and he rarely kills anybody. He's like a live action cartoon. He's extremely creative in finding the funny of every environment. Definitely one of the greatest physical comedians of our time. His movies may have some of the cheesiest dialog and plots, but he's adorable, and his fights are always massively impressive purely because of the creativity behind it. Kicking people with a trash can on his foot, using those little wooden shoes in Holland, slipping out of his jacket and back into it, fighting on the ledge of a ridiculously tall building, making it look effortless to slip through a tiny hole or climb up the corner of a building... He's just freaking brilliant, I love him.

My favorite Jackie Chan final fights:

Actually, pretty much every fight from these two movies blew me away. I have trouble deciding between Legend of Drunken Master and Who Am I for being my favorite Hong Kong Jackie film. My favorite Jackie film is Rush Hour though, because it has a good plot, good comedy, and good fights (and it was made for American audiences, so naturally it meets what I was raised to believe is a good buddy action film).

As for Jet Li, I like him for his badassness and his superhuman speed. He moves so incredibly quickly that I am left with my mouth open and I'm on an adrenaline rush. His films are much darker than Jackie's, and Jet's fights are creative in a completely different way. He's fond of using the wires for more time in the air, and he's all about delivering that fatal punch after finessing them with the fancy footwork. And because he's so fast, he's one of the few fighters that can believably take on a whole gang of thugs all at once. Jackie's pretty good about doing this too, but for Jet it's where the creativity comes in. This man's moves are pure beauty. I love him. But his movies usually contain a whole lot of blood and lots of over-dramatic acting. But I love him.

The Enforcer and Kiss of the Dragon are my favorite Jet Li movies.

I also watch the goofy, obscure films like Master of the Flying Guillotine too if I catch them on TV. Such an unintentionally hilarious film. Also, Stephen Chow is good for the random/supernatural stuff that leaves you scratching your head (which I believe is intentional). Kung Fu Hustle, for instance, was funny yet dramatic yet completely insane. Nothing I want to watch often, but good for a change. And Bruce Lee is good, but he kind of bores me. I know that's sacrilegious for a martial arts fan to say, but it's true. But he was the pioneer of making creative martial arts movies, so I definitely have an appreciation for him. I just prefer the quicker moving stuff. And I'm not big on the artsy flying wuxia stuff. I can only stand that for so long. Usually only if Chow Yun-Fat is involved. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, probably wouldn't have cared for it if Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh hadn't been in it, but that's one that actually has a somewhat cohesive story that I can follow. Movies like Hero and Curse of the Golden Flower completely baffle me, and the flying just gets in the way of the awesome fighting. What can I say, even when it comes to martial arts, I can't stand the artsy stuff. But like I said, I'll watch anything with Chow Yun-Fat, and he's not even a martial artist.

Okay, I've pretty much written a book there, I think it's time to move on.

4. Sam Seaborn

SAM!!!! I adore Sam. Definitely my favorite character from The West Wing. He's just so adorably baffled all the time, and he's ridiculously passionate, and he's a perfectionist, and he believes the best in everybody, and he's snarky, and he's intelligent, and he really cares about people, and he's a little arrogant. I LOVE HIM! By the way, when I saw Rob Lowe on the cancer telethon, I was tempted to call just so I could say that I talked to Sam Seaborn. And I literally forgot his real name in my excitement, so I really would have asked to speak with Sam Seaborn, and they would have been like, "Whaaaaat???"

5. Robert DeNiro

I love this man. So, so, so very hard. I was HUGELY obsessed with him back in the summer/fall of 2002. I was freshly graduated from high school and worrying about my future, and Robert somehow became my escape. I don't even remember how. I had seen him in various things as I grew up, namely Awakenings, so he was always there, but I didn't really notice him until after I had seen Meet the Parents, which I saw with my friend Loren and we had had a ridiculously good time and I'll always remember that movie fondly because of that, but we both were in awe of the DeNiro after that movie. And then I went to the video store and rented every DeNiro movie they had even though I had already seen most of them at some point and I fell in love even more, and then I bought my very first DVD player and the very first DVD that I bought was Showtime. Actually, the first DVD that I bought was The Accidental Spy (Jackie Chan), but that was before I had a DVD player. I bought Showtime with my DVD player, and I watched it over and over and over again because I only had two DVDs, but that's when my obsession really started. I'm deeply embarrassed that Showtime is what set it off, but there you have it. I used to watch that movie at least 3 times a day (all the Robert bits, anyway). The leather jacket, the scruff, the attitude, it was too much for me to handle. And then I spent all of my babysitting money on new DeNiro DVDs every single week at Suncoast. The Suncoast guy always knew what obsessions I was having at whatever moment. That was my favorite place to hang out between classes. Yay for the mall being right by the college! Anyway, I eventually bought every DeNiro DVD they had, and I taped every single DeNiro movie off of TV that was shown (and let me just say, that was a good year for cable showing DeNiro movies) and it got to the point where I had all but 5 or 10 movies on his resume (and his resume is freaking huge, by the way). Oh, and I read his biography twice. TWICE! I never read biographies. My obsession level was insane. I even have 4 DeNiro posters on my wall.

Anyway, best films:

GoodFellas - Definitely my #1 favorite
Taxi Driver - Oh man, I was utterly obsessed with this film for months
Meet the Parents - a little outdated now, but I still love it
Analyze This - Heeeeeee. And the sequel, while not nearly as good, contains DeNiro singing songs from The West Side Story, so... totally worth a watch.
Men of Honor - This movie never fails to make me cry happy/inspired tears.
Bang the Drum Slowly - This movie never fails to make me bawl. Probably DeNiro's most lovable character, and naturally, it's a movie about death. *sigh*
Raging Bull - DeNiro was freaking amazing, the film is beautiful, but it's a tad bit boring here and there, but still one of my most watched films.
Godfather Part 2
This Boy's Life - DeNiro's a total dick, but ooooooh how I love him!
Midnight Run - Ooooooh how I love this film. I used to rent it from the library every time I went (well, every other time, rules and whatnot, psh). And then it finally got released to DVD and I bought it. I watched it so much that I pretty much know it by heart. This is DeNiro in his hottest years, and the movie is a classic 80s buddy action movie. Pure adorableness, and not bad for DeNiro's first comedic turn.

Honorable mentions for Jacknife, Heat, and Casino. And even though The Fan was utterly atrocious, I must say that that is one of DeNiro's most amazing performances. Too bad the film had such a sucky script (and the cinematography, ick. I don't know what they were thinking). But DeNiro really moves me in that film (as in, he scares the crap out of me and yet I still cry for him at the end).

6. Gilmore Girls

This is another teenage drama that just blew me away with its amazing uniqueness. The heart of the show is the bond between Lorelai and her daughter Rory, and their love for each other has made me cry so many times. This is just one of those shows that makes you really appreciate your mother. I already love my mother like crazy, and it's just nice to see a teenager that feels the same way as me, as opposed to most shows where the teenagers always hate their parents. I also adored the relationship between Lorelai and her own mother Emily. Now that relationship was just plain heart-wrenching, because you knew that they loved each other, but they just couldn't say it. And Emily was so controlling, but in the most lovable way imaginable, and it killed me that all she really had to do was ask Lorelai to come to dinner or spend time with her instead of creating these situations that forced Lorelai into doing it. And it kills me even more that Emily had to do these things in order for Lorelai to realize that she did in fact want to spend time with her, and had Emily originally just asked instead of forcing her into it, she probably would have said no out of pure stubbornness. And I loved Lorelai's relationship with her father, too. The episode where Richard had a heart attack and they can't get the words out, that makes me cry pretty hard. And of course I was totally wrapped up in Luke/Lorelai, and later Rory/Marty, and I adored all the goofy people of Star's Hollow, and I loved that Rory's drama never overtook the adults' story lines. The show was geared at teenagers, but it was more about Lorelai's growth than Rory's.

Anyway, this was a very beautiful, intelligently written show with some of the most realistic portrayals of familial relations, and it's a show that every mother and daughter should watch. I originally watched it as it aired by myself, but when the DVDs came out, I watched them with my mother, and she really enjoyed it, too (and she cried much more than I did).

7.Crews/Reese

Need I say more? Hee. They're beautiful and they get each other like no one else. Yin and yang. Adorable banter. They look good in Kevlar. Crews encourages Reese to think outside of the box and Reese creates boundaries for him. They are forever linked together, partners for life, no matter what happens to them or who they end up with. They just click, and they always have, despite not being too fond of each other in the beginning. Their partnership has grown so beautifully and you can really tell that they care about each other, even if they'd never admit it (well, Charlie might admit it, but Reese never would). I just love them. Their partnership is the heart of the show. They're funny together, they're kickass together, they're pretty together, they're intelligent together, they just belong together, plain and simple. Be it as partners/friends/future lovers, whatever you want them to be. &hearts &hearts &hearts This is one ship where I'm kind of okay with them not ending up together, pretty much because I truly believe that they'll always be in each other's lives, no matter what.

Whew! Told you there was a lot of hyperness. I don't know where it came from.
