METAAA. I love a good meta, so bravo to this! ;)

What you mention about Ten is SO FREAKIN' TRUE, I CAN'T EVEN. He actually BECAME A PERSON, and I think that's what RTD does so well, is make his characters seem like REAL people, because of how utterly attuned he is to the human character. Ten isn't going to be everyone's favorite, I get that, we all have different opinions, ~IT MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND~ but hate for him because of he actually HAD emotions? He was fully fleshed out and REAL. Yes, some people just want their tv to be a happy ~escape~ (more power to them) but when it comes to full out character writing, so utterly consistent, and so completely realistic? I will never be convinced that Ten isn't one of the best out there. EVER.

That's part of the reason I love him so much is because he was so REAL. I could connect to him, and his feelings. The things he saw, the things the Doctor has ALWAYS seen, OF COURSE he would be broken, and hurt, and questioning WHY he lives so long, always being so lonely. I'm just glad that RTD had the creative ambition to take this show (which is a brilliant little concept in itself) and imo, take it to an ENTIRELY new level. Adventure and fun with the occasional little setback is all fine and good (and though I've not seen Classic!Who, this seems like what it may have originally been built on which is great), and I have fun with that, but RTD had the guts to take the fun and adventure and say, 'Hey, you know what? In all actuality, life is not like this.' Bad things happen to good people. Good people do bad things and traveling with the Doctor...it's an adventure, and it's life-changing, but people get hurt. No one is bulletproof, not even the Doctor.' He expanded on the adventure and the traveling and all that entails and had the guts to explore those emotions and in essence make a character study of every single one of his amazing characters. Rather than pawns to the plot, the characters actually became flesh and blood to the story. Things didn't reset, and things didn't necessarily always end happily without any damage along the way, because lets be honest, that's not how it happens in real life.

All in all, I guess I just love him because he made things so real, and he doesn't forget the past, just as we never really do, we BUILD AND LEARN from it. If that's not your cup of tea, that's cool, but like you, I want the deep, meaty character arcs and for them to actually BE people, with all of their faults and flaws and endearments. If I'm not emotionally involved it's not nearly as engaging. I guess that's what I miss these days is the emotional depth. There are emotions, for sure, I mean the recent, "One last day with your beloved...", the reaction from Eleven, SPOT ON, but I feel like it's just not built on. But I digress. RTD's Who had SO MUCH HEART, and I loveee a good plot (LOST...HELLO...plus, I don't think RTD's plots were even as ~horrible~ as haters like to say, this shows plots are ALL CRACKY...come on) but characters will always be my first love.

Annddd...I didn't mean to write a novel, but YOUR THOUGHTS JUST MADE ME ALL *hearts and stars in eyes*, so I had to share my ~feelings~. LOLOL. This was lovely work, bb.

Long comment is long. But very appreciated.

I love this:

RTD had the guts to take the fun and adventure and say, 'Hey, you know what? In all actuality, life is not like this.' Bad things happen to good people. Good people do bad things and traveling with the Doctor...it's an adventure, and it's life-changing, but people get hurt. No one is bulletproof, not even the Doctor.'

Perfect. You said it better than I ever could, bb.

There's this quote that I can't be bothered to find right now, but it talks about how scifi is the perfect mirror on society and human nature. Which is exactly what RTD chose to do with his brand of scifi. He did character studies. Yes, there was the TARDIS and the sonic, but take that away, and you just have people. Very real people. And that is some amazing stuff right there.

Epic quote sounds epic!! I can totally see that about sci-fi. It's a great vehicle to use because everything doesn't have to be so "literal." You can take totally unreal situations in this genre but pull out some of the best commentary on life while still making things fun and interesting. I used to be like, SCI-FI??? WHAT EVEN IS THIS? And now it's like THE BEST GENRE EVER. Oh, how times change. LOL.

Lol Ash, I hardly know what more to say to your comments because they're so wonderful and perfect!

To me, it just seemed so obvious that RTD was always trying to show a message like that with his DW. For example, in the DWC for Doomsday, so many times he mentions that of course he couldn't kill off Rose, of course he couldn't, it's a family show about HOPE.

LOL. AWWWW...you flatter me. It's your epic meta that got me all ~philosophical~. ;)

Yes, and I'm REALLY thankful to him for that. NGL, even though I knew she came back when I was first watching, when I got to AoG and heard, "This is the story of how I died." I was like OMG WHAT IF SHE REALLY DOES DIE?! MAYBE SHE JUST RETURNS AS A GHOST OR SOMETHING! LOL. ~*~Irrational fear for fave characters~*~ And from what I hear about Torchwood he's not afraid to kill his characters so THANK GOODNESS FOR WHO BEING A FAMILY SHOW. Doomsday was heart-breaking enough without her actually dying. LOL. And as a sidenote: I'm so glad the writers/producers/Murray LOVED her. I get a bit of twisted satisfaction out of the fact that not only did the haters have her in S1/S2, she was in all of S3 without actually being there, then she returned in S4 AND the last person Ten saw in the Specials, and as the cherry on the sundae, years after Rose's technical "companion time" and she's voted the #1 companion in Britain? MUAHAHAHAHA.

Haters gonna hate.

LOL.

I had the same thoughts! Like you, I knew she came back, but I didn't know it what capacity!

One of the biggest kicks I get my Who love is the Murray love for her. Or maybe he was told what specifically to write. I just love that of all the original songs with lyrics made for the new series that 3/4 of them have very obvious references to Rose. None as obvious as "Love Don't Roam" but still it's ridiculous! And I love it.

LOL I got so much satisfaction from the fact that she was voted #1 companion in 2010. GUESS WHAT INTERNET? PEOPLE LIKE ROSE. SHE IS NOT SOME HORRIBLE PERSON YOU CAN ALL HATE.

I don't get it.

Ohhh, Murray. Have you seen the BTS thing they did for one of the Proms? It's called Music & Monsters I think, and he talks about how much he LOVESSSS writing music for Rose, and how Rose was just "taken into everyone's heart" and how wonderful she is. We know Murray, you love her, YOU CAN'T HIDE IT! lol.

YES. I tend to forget sometimes when seeing things exclusively in the online fandom, but as a general, entire audience, I think the majority think Rose is awesome and they love her. Smart people, them. ;)

I think I have actually. I do remember the bit when he was talking about the actual song "Doomsday" and how he wanted it to be like a heartbeat of a young woman. Seriously, HOW DO THEY LOVE THESE CHARACTERS/THIS SHIP AS MUCH AS I DO?

I will never understand Rose hate. Never. Even my least favorite things about the show are still things I'd stick up for if it came down to it. This is my fandom and I have loyalty and it drives me up a wall to see people claim to love a show so much and then spend all of their time tearing down such an important character. It makes me wonder how they watch the show.

YESSSS. GAH, MURRAY. Why so amazing??

Same here, bb, same here. It actually makes me angry sometimes and I have to remind myself to simmer down. LOL. But seriously, LOST fandom was like that too for such a long time...peeps tearing down stuff and main characters, then continuing to watch the show...I'm like, STOP WATCHING IF IT EATS AT YOU THAT MUCH. LOLOL. Sometimes I think people just resent main characters because they're so important rather than the fact that they truly don't like the character. And even so, why spend all your time hating? Spread the love, yo!

Exactly. I can certainly understand not liking a character or not being all that interested in them? But constant hatred? Maybe it's just my personality, but that would get so exhausting. I like to talk about things I love with other people who love them. It's fandom, not real life. I don't have to be rational. I don't have to focus on something if I don't want to.

Are you a member of starwhales? It's a great comm full of positive people!

PRETTY MUCH YES TO EVERYTHING. I'd much rather spend my time loving what I love than focusing on hate.

I am not a member! I shall join. I can always do with more Who love. Thanks for the link, bb!

Yes, Murray Gold! IDK I think all of them are pretty obvious (I mean, who else would be the girl back home Ten was thinking of while dancing instead of Astrid? And the things he says in Song for Ten too...), and I love it. I've never had a show before with 3 canon original songs dedicated to my OTP! <333 (Like, that my D/R playlist isn't just stuff I had to think of, lol). And they're all great songs too....
