I successfully cast on for a "double purled" (as opposed to double knitted) potholder using "Judy's magic cast on" for toe up socks (see http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATmagiccaston.html), only I reversed the direction of the "scooping up loops" since I was going to purl, not knit. It makes a gorgeous beginning for a humble potholder.
