This is an interesting observation. Science fiction fans are indeed notorious for obsessively picking apart minutiae. And yet...I've watched incredibly detailed diatribes about continuity (or the lack thereof) in other genres as well--even in the seemingly permissive world of daytime television, where a character long dead can be effortlessly resurrected for the next season. Nitpicking isn't limited to the geeks; it just takes on a different form and focus in each fandom.
