An apology to the universe

Jul 20, 2008 22:15

I was in a mood today, and I had to go to work, which made the mood a little worse. And then I found out all kinds of things about all kinds of people and was steeped in the unpleasantness that happens to other people. I felt worn out and run down by the standard cruelties. And this kid came into the bookstore, and he was pudgy and awkward and glasses-wearing, and he wanted to know where the Naruto manga were. And I was perfectly cordial and pointed them out to him. He kept talking, though, and told me that he likes reading manga. That he likes reading a lot of Japanese things. He really likes Japanese stuff. And I nodded and smiled and said that was cool and went off to tidy up some books somewhere.

I should've talked to him longer. I should have told him that he was cool, and that I liked manga and Japanese stuff, too, and maybe asked about what his favourite series were. But I didn't. I blew it.

So, to the kid, and to the universe who threw someone in my path who needed me to do better than I did: I apologise. I hope I get another chance to do better.
