I just found out that my 13-year-old brother didn't get D.A.R.E. in fourth grade. Or fifth grade, OR sixth grade. Also (and I hope he is exaggerating) the entire "substance abuse" section of his seventh- and eighth-grade health classes was one video about why you shouldn't smoke weed.
WTF!?!?!
I'm not straight-edge, and I'm not saying he should be...but by the time he's 13 years old he should know certain things, you know? This is a travesty.
I'm going to send him on a scavenger hunt through Wikipedia, to answer the following questions about the following drugs: What is it made of? or How is it made?, What does it look like? How is it taken? Is it an "upper" or a "downer"?, and Does is cause hallucinations? What is the "active ingredient", if there is one? What are some other common names for this drug?
Legal Drugs: tobacco, shisha, ethyl alcohol, caffeine, isopropyl alcohol
Legal Drugs (if used as intended): steroids, adderall, caffeine pills, ritalin, albuterol, vicodin, percocet, legal opiates (like morphine), ruphenol, cold medication (like Coricidin HBP), tranquilizors, barbiturates, inhalants
Illegal Drugs: marijuanna, hasheesh, mushrooms, cocaine, crack cocaine, extacy, illegal opiates (like heroine), absinthe, LSD, PCP, methamphetimines
The problem is that "my solution" sounds boring and unhelpful. It's hard to learn anything useful about drugs by writing out endless lists on paper. Still, these are things he should have at least a PASSING knowledge about by this age. Whatever happened to after school specials and "very special episodes" of Saved By The Bell?
On the up side, he knows all about alcoholism and painkiller abuse from watching M*A*S*H, and marijuanna smoking and brownies thanks to That 70's Show. And I recently discovered that you can get a pretty decent sex education from watching Two and A Half Men.
