lovers while we sleep

Once again, time flies. Almost three months since my last update.

I guess the big news is that I am now a fiancé! Sally and I got engaged. I will announce it eventually on Facebook but thought my (three?) remaining LJ friends should know first. We got a ring made up, a lovely art deco style with a big 'apricot' sapphire surrounded by diamonds, set in rose and white gold. It's awesome. A bit blingy for my taste, but Sally loves it, and that's all that counts.

I'm reading "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier. I kept coming across references to it and its famous first line, "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again." Apparently one of the most famous opening lines in literary history. Not much of a first line if you ask me, and I don't really understand why it's famous, but anyway. I was in the bookstore browsing the classics section and I suddenly thought of it and wondered if it was there, and it wasn't. Then I turned around to the opposite shelf and it was staring me in the face. I figured it was a sign so I bought it.

I'm also coding a computer program to crack the Enigma code. I don't really know why. To keep the brain busy, I guess! I think I know how to do it, I just lack the programming ability so that part is progressing very slowly. If it works I will be stoked. Currently it can encipher or decipher a single character. But it's a start! One thing the whole process has given me is a huge respect for the guys who cracked it originally, without any form of computer as we know it today.

Other than that, life goes on. I am playing Touch on Monday nights, and having something of a breakout season. I have been playing in that same team on and off (mostly on) for six years and during that time been lucky to score more than one try every two games. This season I've been getting two or three tries nearly every game. I have no idea what changed, either I've got more leg muscles from doing my PT sessions on Wednesdays (allowing me to sprint better) or I've just absorbed so much rugby by osmosis, watching it to the point of obsession, that I've managed to subconsciously pick up on how to play. Anyway, I'm not complaining, it's great - it's just odd to suddenly find myself a good touch player at the ripe old age of 35, particularly when I'm up against all these twinkle-toed 19 year olds who should be running rings around me. The only downside is most of my tries and scored by diving for the line, resulting in permanently skinned elbows and knees.
