So... my friend Cata (the previously mentioned Colombian) hurt her ankle several months ago, and it wasn't getting better. She was signed up for Oxfam Trailwalker, so she asked if I'd be interested covering for her in her team of four, as she knew I'd done it before and that I am fairly active as regards hiking.
There was still about two months to go by this time, and the swelling had gone down a lot, she could walk a few hundred metres without too much trouble. It didn't seem likely that she could possibly still be injured that long, so I said I would do it if she couldn't, but I didn't expect it to happen. Last week, after it still not getting better, she finally got an MRI and found out she has a torn ligament in her ankle. 95% severed, held on by a few fibres at the back.
So of course she's out of Trailwalker, and I'm in, with two weeks to go until D-Day and me having done no training, as I've been doing PT sessions in the gym rather than any hiking recently. Fortunately it's only the 60km route, not the 100km that I did last time, but it's still going to suck. I went out on Saturday and walked a quick 20km, but my feet and legs were buggered by the end, and I couldn't imagine having to walk another 40km on top of that.
I got an e-mail from an Oxfam woman this morning saying "It is wonderful of you to step in at this late stage, but I hear that you are more than capable to keep the team going."
Well, yes... normally I would be, but rumours of my fitness for Trailwalker have been greatly exaggerated. Oh well, such is life. I will make it regardless, no matter how much pain I am in by the end.
