funny thought i had while smoking (outside because the liberals use government to get rid of something that pissed them off)

we have all seen those "i love my country but fear my government" stickers, usually on the cars with "impeach bush" and other such lovely liberal stickers ( Read more... )

i love my country. i generally distrust the government, but no more than i distrust any large bureaucratic organization, like insurance companies. and at least there's the illusion of getting to vote. the far left is even worse than the far right, for the simple fact that they're so strict about liberties.

but a company can be closed, a company can fall simply due to shift in demand, coke would have to close if people protested and only drank tap water for 2 months. of if someone made a better soda. or...well ive listed them for you before.

however the government, yeah buddy good plan, they can actually reach in to your bank account and take money, they can put you in prison, they could take my guns, my right to speak.

and the really scary part is if someone ever got that power and wanted to keep it. they could make a damn good try. i have no idea weather it would work or not.

but thats a lot more scary than coke making a lot of money and taking its bottling plans off shore (which they only do because of the government being ass bags).

so perhaps you should think a littler harder before handing your rights and life over to them.

the only reason i [tentatively] support socialized healthcare is because supposedly the government can offer a better deal than private companies can. it's a solid financial model. if a private company came along afterwards and said they could do it cheaper than the government (which is entirely likely, look at independent rail systems, fed ex, that sort of thing) then yeah, i'd probably sing a different tune at that point. if everyone canceled their health insurance, i'm sure it would get things done, but what idiot who can afford to pay for it isn't going to? it's a total gamble. one catastrophic (or even kinda minor) accident and all of a sudden you're in debt for 10 years.
so in essence, it's not the government i support, but the lowest bidder.

chris if they socialized it there would be no way for a company to rise up and offer better services. because the government would have control of the providers.

and i dont see what fed ex has to do with anything, the USPS was privatized long ago...and for the record the only change most people have noticed it the new 'forever' stamp. which is a good thing.

the government rail systems are failing almost everywhere...

i am looking at them.

That's not entirely true. That could be a worst case scenario, but independent providers could easily step up and offer cheaper rates for the same service but they'd (most likely) have to conform to government imposed regulations. It can work, it does work in countries like Sweden.

I hate to say it but the government in its current state appears full of corruption and pay-offs that it seems unlikely anything ever gets done correctly.

under all the plans ive seen a doctor would be basically a state employee, therefor working for them, and not able to bypass being forced to see all the people the government send to him. and this is where the problem starts, because then you end up waiting behind 40 people with a cold (who normally wouldnt have gone to a doctor over a cold, because it wasnt that bad, but now its free so why not?), when you have a terrible stomach ulcer.

Well, see way back when that's how it used to be in Canada. The doctors could turn away whomever they wanted to, no matter how ill they were if they couldn't pay they wouldn't treat. As they started to institute the new health care plan, the doctors went on strike. In the process a pregnant woman couldn't find a doctor to deliver her baby and she died during child birth ( ... )

I found decent health insurance for $12 a month for non smokers, and like $20 for smokers (under the age of 45). and i'll shit a brick if most people cant afford that. i knew a homeless girl who made more than that every day bumming.

then lets not forget 99% of full time jobs offer some sort of coverage.

so really that leave only a very small percentage who really cant afford it.

this is what gets me...and dont take this the wrong way. you said Here it's free. Now, if you need dialysis it's free.. but what you need to understand is its NOT free, its not like its being magically treated in a burst of fairy dust (though that would be cool) someone is paying for it. people who have worked hard their whole lives, devoted themselves to making a great living for themselves and their families, so they can send their kids to ivy league school, and afford the best of everything. and its their by right. they worked hard and Made success ( ... )

I know. You're right, I shouldn't say it's free because its not. To me, i'd rather take part in a portion of my taxes going to pay for everyone getting some sort of health care then ( ... )

PS

as i was brushing my hair i was thinking over most of the conversations ive had via LJ recently. and i realized that you have been amazingly open minded. im not saying that i think i can saw you, but you seem to actually respond to what i say rather than with just another 'slogan' like most people do.

i wanted to say thank you, even if you will never agree with me thank you for talking to me, not at me.

Hahah. Awww, that's probably the nicest thing i've had someone say to me whose arguing with me. Thankyou. You didn't have to say that and I appreciate it.

Well, swaying may not happen but I can totally appreciate your position. In some ways I even agree with you-it's just at the same time I know what would happen to society if we stopped helping each other. It'd be that dark future that was a common theme on tv shows in the 1980's. We need to find some way to bring the lower class closer to the middle class and bring the upper class a few steps back down so perhaps they can get their heads out of their asses.

The real question is do you think people would stop helping each other if the government stopped forcing them to ( ... )
