Ive spent the last few weeks of my life in the hellish state of Wisconsin, and reading 1984. something i should have known better than to do at the same time...its just far too damn depressing.
id rather talk about the book than that dirty depressing state. but ive got a few other things to vent as well.
I read pretty much everything, just for pleasure, but with all this reading comes an understanding of the social significance of any one piece of literature, and those who most prominently read it.
so ive just got one question for all you so called thinkers.
why the fuck do all the artsy, literary, college professor types read shit like 1984 (which i enjoyed greatly dont get me wrong) then go vote liberal or democrat?
seriously...i dont get it. i finished the book a little over a week ago and i can not for the life of me figure it out.
now im not saying anyone who reads a book should live their life by it, im not even saying you have to agree with everything one writer writes to enjoy their writing. but when you use a piece of writing to further your political or ethical position you would figure that the book would have to be at least somewhat in keeping with your position.
right?
for those of you who have not read the book, or have just listened to other people talk about it heres the basics:
1984 = communism, government control is bad. collective be bad, individual good.
simple enough right?
i think so.
now lets examine the political left which dominates the artsy college professor literary type. from here on out called ACPLT)
ACPLT: government programs be good, government regulation be good. collective money pot redistributed by the government be good, food, housing, market, medicine regulated by the government be good. and no guns for mallorie be good (which is soooo untrue)
(the use of 'be good' is strictly for the dumbasses who subscribe to this school of thought)
or even if the ACPLT in question doesnt want government regulation of everything they still vote democratic...for a while now ive been thinking they have been tricked (and i was) in to thinking that because the democratic party is down with gay people and abortions they must surly be the backers of freedom and liberty in all other departments.
right?
nope.
anyway back to my point. countless times ive gotten to talking to a ACPLT about books and politics and about 30% of the time they will bring up 1984...and act as if it somehow agrees with them...then talk about how they vote left...up until a week ago i just assumed they knew what they were talking about because i hadnt read the book. and now that i have i am stumped.
wtf.
its very simple let me reiterate:
ACPLT: government control good
1984: government control bad.
seriously wtf.
the only thing i can think of is that people dont actually read, they just like to have book shelves filled with books in their houses so people think they are smart or something. well mr. Gatsby i see that your books arent cut, yes sir i do.
or people have been fooled like i had been when i was 16 and younger...in which case they just need to be informed.
seriously i was really really out of the loop.
i sat in a car with my ex husband (then husband) and was almost in tears with the concept that people think they have a right to government provided health care. now i was a 16 year old, broke high school drop out, so i dont want to hear it from anyone whop thinks they have it tough. but i understood that no one owed me anything, and that i had no right to what i didnt earn but someone else did. the only right i was born with is the right to work as hard as i am able for whatever dream i may have. to pursue happiness...and to life, uninhibited by my government...not assisted, just uninhibited.
yet...i watched the stupid 911 movie, and i sneered at the people with the bush stickers on their cars. (etc)
thankfully i voted libertarian because i wasnt totally in the dark.
then one day i put two and two together (and friends i did not get five) and realized that somewhere at some point in my life i had been imprinted with this image of the political Right as being this crazy Christian guy of about age 70 pointing his wizened old hand at some poor gay kid and screaming "KILL!!", as marching his wrinkly old butt though the streets telling people what they could and counldnt do, with emphasis on the couldnt.
and yeah republicans are ass bags about gay people, i'll give you that. but thats about it.
what i was visualizing was an aged version of Big Brother from the 1984 book i started this entry on. funny story though...its the Political Right who wants me to be able to keep my guns, its the Right who thinks that when i work hard and earn something no one has the right to take it away, its the Right who thinks that if i want to say something that might hurt someone's feelings i have the right to do that, its the Right that thinks that if i open up a store its my store and i should be able to smoke in it, its the Right that protects my rights as an Individual.
so i hope that was informative for those of you who are dumb motherfuckers and vote based on one thing that a party offers and doesnt bother to look in to anything else, including the other party.
and for those of you who see that cool ACPLT talking about liberalism, and who have never checked to see if it includes liberty.
ive been thinking im pretty kick ass for a while now. so im just going to let it all show.
for those of you who look to the left and see some cool guy who is young and listens to all the underground kick ass music, and reads all the right local indy papers, and smokes a little pot from time to time, the guy who knows how to have a good time, but is still 'down to earth'.
and then look to the right and see some nasty old southern baptist, who just wants to run everyones fun. who doesnt want you having your crazy butt sex with people of the same gender, and mutters 'nigger' to himself along with a multitude of other nasty racial slurs. and is every moment of his life seriously thinking about making a bible cannon to shoot down those nasty sinners with the word of god with.
yeah for you guys...you know its what youre thinking of when you think of the left and the right.
i want you to do one thing for me...im not asking you to change your beliefs, im not asking you to vote differently or at all. just this one thing:
when you think of the Right...think of me.
if you dont know me, i am an Atheist (oh god a conservative atheist wtf is that??? right?:P) I'm 21 years old. I'm pretty fucking hot (hey we need an image to replace the old nasty guy) my mother is a Liberal Painter (no she doesnt just use paint liberally) my parents are divorced, i am pro choice and pro gun, one of my best friends is a gay man and i think if he ever decides thats theres just one dick for him he should be able to marry it...Im not such a brain washed weiner that im scared to say i really dont like mexicans, i have a shit ton of tattoos, dyed orange hair, facial piercings, i listen to punk and leonard cohen, i read fucking kafka for fucks sake. I am an arab by blood (oh noes an arab conservative, now that really fucks shit up).
oh yeah and i take naked photos of hot punk and goth chicks for a living.
did i mention naked?
this rant was going somewhere better than that but the phone rang and now im distracted.
in summation my basic line of thinking is that the image of political systems is whats really got everything all twisted up. because when someone voting for socialized medicine tells me that 1984 is a great book i know that something has got to be up. i suspect that they have just accepted the above images (minus the one of me) and assume that well of course the cool ACPLT must be the one who stands for freedom, liberty and small government. and the ACPLT votes democrat so well there you have it.
after all we have all heard the ACPLTs of the world saying "damn The Man" so what are they now muttering "but lets give him more taxes and trust him to properly distribute the nations health care" under their breath when we arent listening? because they are saying both...and no one calls them on it.
consider them called.
somehow i knew you all would leave it up to me in the end.
