Okay! This could become a long list.

My top recommendations are Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles and Dark Souls (though Demon's Souls is still great). Dark Souls may or may not be for you though, it's a game meant to be notoriously hard but in a "You have to learn the terrain, boss patterns, how works well in what situation, etc" way. You have to be cautious in it too; unlike most games these days, just running in somewhere blind will get you killed fast. Folklore and Valkyria Chronicles, though, I'm confident would be great fits for you.

Folklore is a very artistic game, most of its cutscenes are handled in a comic book style, story and characters are engaging, and gameplay is pretty fun. Plus if you're open to DLC, Folklore is one of the few cases where it's justified and you get tons of value for your dollar.

Valkyria Chronicles is a mix of action and turn-based for gameplay; when you're aiming a shot, everything just stops, for example. You'd have to see videos to understand it. :P

There's actually demos for both Folklore and Valkyria Chronicles if you want to try them out, see what you think.

Aside from those three games, I can suggest: Portal 2, Catherine (get this it is awesome), Hyperdimension Neptunia (gameplay isn't too good since it was experimental, but I think story was neat for personified consoles and all; mk-2 is coming out this month), Mortal Kombat (it has an actual story mode too), Bayonetta, Shadows of the Damned, and Alice: Madness Returns. There may be more I don't remember, too.

There's also a PSN download for Flower if you have a Sixaxis controller. It's not a typical video game, there's no real story to it but it's definitely a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
