Title: Snowblind
Part Twelve
Length: 6937, I may have got a little carried away with this one.
Author:
firiel77Pairing: Adam/Tommy
Rating: N17
Warnings: Nothing really; maybe schmoop. Unbeta’d though, so let me know if there’s something really irritating or that makes no sense at all (especially if I spell orgasm wrong again).
Summary: A couple days of R & R on the tour.
Authors Notes: I’m having a hard time letting the boys go on this one so I thought I’d do a few more instalments along the road, maybe four or five.
Feedback: Definitely. I know what I like to read but struggle to do it myself. I’m well aware my own writing needs tons of work. It’s all good as long as it’s constructive. If I manage to spell orgasm wrong again just shoot me. You’d think in this type of writing that would be one word one could get right.

It was midsummer and everyone was all taking advantage of a three day break in the tour to split up and have some time off to themselves. Tommy had originally thought he’d fly home for a couple days and see his family but Adam had other plans. He’d asked Lane to arrange a getaway for the two of them in Savannah for a couple nights before rejoining the tour. They’d played Jacksonville last night and this morning Lane had rented a car and they’d driven up to Savannah where she’d dropped them off at a hotel before taking off to stay with college friends. The plan was to pick them up in two days time then they’d pick up the tour in Atlanta for two shows before winding through the rest of the south and south west before reaching the west coast.
So far the tour had been amazing with each show selling out well in advance. The crowds had been energetic and appreciative and so had pushed the band and dancers to some amazing performances. Finally they were sorting out some of the problems with sound that had plagued them on the last tour. Their single, the one Tommy had written, was staying at number one with no sign of dropping and the second single had been released and was quickly climbing the charts.
Tommy and Adam were writing together now as well, taking some of the pressure off of Monte who had his hands full with his whole family along on tour. Often at night the two of them would sit around the hotel room and play around with what they’d come up with. Tommy was subtly trying to steer Adam away from his love for dance music with songs that were a little grittier. He couldn’t really argue because “Want” had already outsold all Adam’s other singles combined.
They’d taken their time driving up to Savannah, staying off the interstate and stopping in all sorts of small towns along the way. Adam had bought a new camera and was keen on trying it out. Lane had finally had to put her foot down and tell him they couldn’t stop at every quaint building or historic site or they’d never get to Savannah. As she’d pointed out in exasperation; how many photo’s of confederate graveyards or Baptist churches does one person need.
So they’d confined themselves to pointing out businesses with odd names like Winn Dixie and Piggly Wiggly until she rolled her eyes at that as well. After that the two of them fell back to making funny faces at each other and giggling like teenage girls until Lane sighed deeply.
“I don’t think I’m getting paid enough for this.”
“We could always just sit in the back seat and make out.”
“Believe me, that would be preferable.”
They’d stopped for dinner in the outskirts of Savannah at a barbeque place Lane had been before and drank ice tea to try to cool off while their dinner arrived. It was humid in the south, different than the dry heat both Tommy and Adam had grown up with in California. The fan in the restaurant barely moved the air around and the humidity made their clothing stick to them. When their food came Adam had watched Lane and Tommy, with a look which was equal parts disapproval and envy, while they tucked into heaping plates of biscuits and pulled pork, with extra sauce of course, while he picked at his chef`s salad.
By the time they reached their hotel they were exhausted. The combination of gruelling tour schedule and summer heat had wiped them both out so when Lane had dropped them off at the front door they`d only just found the energy to register, bring their bags up to the room, shower and crash together on the huge bed. They watched about fifteen minutes of The Ring before both fell asleep with the TV flickering eerily over the room for the rest of the night.
The next morning they ordered room service and sat on the balcony while they ate and browsed through the guide book Lane had given them when she`d arranged the trip. Lane had gone through it and highlighted sites she thought might be interested in and had also booked them a walking tour and made a reservation for dinner. Their hotel was right downtown in the historic district so everything they needed to see could be easily reached by foot. Savannah, at least what they`d seen of it on the way in last night, was a beautiful old city and they were looking forward to poking around for the day. To be honest, Tommy was also happy to be away from the tour where he often felt like he was under a microscope, ok scratch that, he was under a microscope.
First up was a tour of the sites used in Midnight in the Garden of Good And Evil, a book Lane knew Adam loved. They toured around with a group of other tourists looking at shady squares, the house used in the movie, and the Bonneville cemetery where the bird girl statue had been located. No one seemed to recognize them and Adam happily wandered around taking pictures of anything that struck his fancy. When they were done they stopped for lunch in a cafe overlooking the river and relaxed in the shade. The air was fresher today with a bit of wind coming off the water and so cooling things down.
When they were finished eating Tommy took the camera away from Adam so he could take some pictures of him. He’d pushed his sunglasses up onto his forehead while they sat in the shade so his face wasn’t obscured by the oversize lenses. The sunlight brought out the color of his eyes and with no makeup on his freckles stood out more prominently than usual. Adam looked happy and relaxed and Tommy couldn`t remember a time when he had been more beautiful.
“You should skip the hair and makeup more often Babyboy. You look really good like that,” he told him with a shy grin.
“Seriously?” Adam ran his hand self-consciously through his windblown hair. “I thought you liked that look.
“I do. I mean, I like dressing up too. But I like you this way more.”
“Well, this is definitely easier. And here I thought all that work was for your benefit. I always thought you liked me more...................you know................ feminine.
This statement left Tommy slightly gobsmacked because really, where did Adam get these ideas anyway. “I’d have a pretty hard time confusing you with a woman dude, even with the makeup.” Come on. I’m pretty sure I always knew you were a man.
Tommy reached across the table and put his hand on top of Adams before giving it a gentle squeeze.
“Thanks for doing this. It’s great to be on our own for a couple days.”
Adam smiled back at him. “I’m glad you like it. Lane did a good job.”
After lunch they wandered the riverfront, occasionally ducking into a gift shop or antique store. The streets were not crowded, probably because the heat was rising again, and they walked hand in hand, something Tommy was not totally used to yet. When a beat up pickup truck with a confederate flag on it drove past he tensed up a little, waiting to be called a queer, or worse, but they were undisturbed.
They were in a small jewellery store browsing around, looking for a gift to give Lane for arranging this, when Tommy noticed a middle aged woman and what he took to be her teenage daughter looked at Adam while he shopped and talking to each other quietly. Probably a couple fans he thought. Tommy continued looking at earrings but started working his way towards Adam on the other side of the store when he saw the two of them begin to approach Adam.
Adam noticed them coming and looked up with a smile while the cashier wrapped the bracelet he picked out. He never minded saying hello to fans, he knew it came with the territory, and most people were very cool and respectful anyway so it wasn’t usually a problem.
“Excuse me, are you Adam Lambert?”
“Yes I am. How are you?” Adam greeted her.
“My daughter thought so,” she told him primly, ignoring his question. “
There was something about the way she was looking at Adam, as if she’s tasted something sour, that had alarm bells ringing for Tommy and he made his way quickly to the other mans side just in time to hear what she had to say. He could hardly believe it.
“You people disgust me. You’re all going to burn in hell. You know that, don’t you?”
Adam seemed at a loss for words. He just stood and stared at the woman and daughter with a surprised look on his face but Tommy was having none of it. He was immediately in between Adam and the woman and glaring at her.
“We don’t believe in hell. Anyway, it can’t be that bad if you’re not there,” he told her as he put his arm around Adam’s waist and leaned into him. Fuck her.
The woman looked at the two of them as if they were something she got stuck on her shoe in the street and asked Tommy, “I suppose you’re his boyfriend?”, as if it were the worst thing in the world. She looked as if she were considering spitting on both of them.
Tommy eyed her levelly while he answered, “Yes, ma’am,” because there was no way that was something he would ever be fucking ashamed of, despite small-minded bitches like her. They all looked at each other, the woman’s daughter looking like she’d rather be crawling under a rock, until Adam put a hand on Tommy’s shoulder and pulled him away.
“Come on babe, let’s get out of here.”
Tommy followed him immediately without a word but did turn to level one more look at the woman before she turned and disappeared in the other direction with horrified daughter in tow. He followed Adam out onto the street and struggled to keep up with the other man’s longer strides. Adam didn’t say anything but Tommy could see he was shaken by the encounter. Tommy pulled alongside him and took his hand, making look down at him with a start.
“Are you ok?”
Adam shrugged. “I guess I’m just not used to that kind of thing now. I didn’t expect it. It’s taken a while but now it’s kind of a shock to see my sexual orientation matters so much.”
“It doesn’t. What those people think isn’t important. Not to us.”
“I guess. It still kind of hurts though. That people could hate me so much without even knowing me.”
“Well, fuck them.”
Adam laughed at that and it was good to see him smiling again. Shit that pissed him off. Adam never had anything bad to say about anyone. He was the kindest person Tommy knew and there’s no way he deserved to be treated like that woman had just now. Adam pulled his hand from Tommy’s and instead threw it around his shoulder and pulled him in close, making Tommy smile up at him.
“Thank you. Thanks for stepping in like that.”
Tommy only shrugged. He hadn’t even thought about it at the time. Anyway, he was used to having to stand up for himself. He’d taken a lot of heat over the years; for being small, for dressing strangely, for being pretty rather than handsome, for his hair styles and makeup and nails. Having a boyfriend was just one more thing in a long line of things that made him stand out, made some people think they needed to put him down.
He paused when he noticed Adam smiling at him while they walked. “What?”
“Boyfriend?”
“Damn straight,” he told Adam with absolutely no doubt, squeezing the hand thrown over his shoulder for emphasis. Adam reached across and ruffled Tommy’s hair with his other hand.
They walked around a little more before Tommy pulled Adam into one of the shaded little squares that dotted the historic district of Savannah. It was cooler in there under the live oak trees and they sat on one of the benches and watched some birds pecking around in the lawn. Everything in the district was so old it almost felt as if they’d travelled through time, especially when they could hear the clomping of horses hooves as the tour buggy’s went by. The air was still in here and the heat and humidity was on the rise so that Tommy found himself yawning while he leaned against Adams side. He looked up at Adam and asked him, “What do you say we go back to the room and have a nap?”
Adam had never been much of a napper, not like Tommy, but he was beginning to appreciate them, and he agreed readily. He’d found that with the wearing schedule they were all under that they had to get sleep where they could and there was something to be said for curling up together for a couple hours when they had the time. Dinner wasn’t booked until 7:30 so they had plenty of time for a siesta.
It was warm in the room too so after turning up the air conditioning they had a cool shower and lay on the bed in just their shorts with the overhead fan circling lazily. It was too hot to snuggle in the afternoon heat so they both lay on their backs side by side without touching; their entwined fingers the only contact between their bodies. They were both sound asleep within minutes.
The dinner they had that night was amazing. The restaurant Lane had booked was old and very highly rated, very classy and much more expensive than Tommy figured he could afford. Adam had insisted though and told him that this trip was on him. Tommy had agreed reluctantly to the arrangement. He usually insisted on paying his own way, after all he did have money now, but he’d spent so many years with very little that he found it difficult to justify this kind of extravagance.
They had been given a very private booth so that no one recognized or disturbed then all night and the service had been exemplary. They’d both stuffed themselves on steak and seafood until they couldn’t eat another bite. Tommy had flat out insisted that Adam not order a damn salad and he had complied without much protest. The only think he had passed on was a dessert but by that point Tommy was way too full to eat one either.
When they finished eating the waiter cleared the table and left them alone with the last of their bottle of red wine. The restaurant was quieting and they slid close together in their booth and held hands while they sipped contentedly. Tommy hadn’t been drinking much lately, at least not nearly as much as he used to, and was starting to get a bit of a buzz on. Adam placed their hands on the tabletop and then began tracing over Tommy’s long thin fingers with his hand.
“So,” he started tentatively, making Tommy look up at his face. “I was thinking that maybe tonight we could......you know?”
Tommy caught his drift immediately and smiled. “Yeah?” Even thought he’d been pushing Adam for it for weeks he still found his stomach flip a little with nerves now that the time had apparently come.
“I mean, as long as you still want to?”
Tommy smiled and squeezed his hand reassuringly. “Course I do. Let’s go back to the hotel.”
They walked back to the hotel arm in arm along the riverside stopping occasionally to embrace and kiss deeply when they found a private spot or stretch of shadows. When they got back to the room Tommy found it had been tidied up and scented candles had been placed and lit around the room. There was a chilled bottle of champagne waiting by the sofa as well as two flutes and a huge bouquet of flowers on the coffee table.
When Tommy turned towards Adam in amazement he saw that the other man was equally surprised with the changes in the room. When they looked at the flowers though they saw a card and opened it to find the surprise had been arranged by Lane. The card said only “thanks for being the best boss in the world,” and when Adam read it Tommy could see his eyes were wet with emotion.
“Wow. That was really sweet of her.”
“You deserve it. But I think some of this is for me too.”
“Do you think maybe she’s trying to tell me something?” Adam asked, taking another look at the champagne, flowers, romantic lighting and candles.
“I think she might be.”
“I don’t know if I should be glad of disturbed that everyone is paying so much attention to my sex life.”
“Yeah, I know,” Tommy agreed. “You probably don’t want to know this, but I think there might be a pool on.”
“Seriously? For when we......?”
“Yeah, I overheard LP and Monte talking about it a while ago.” Tommy couldn’t help but laugh. “Monte’s going to be really pissed off. He’s bet that it won’t be until after the tour finished.”
Adam raised one eyebrow sceptically. “So, who’s betting on tonight? Seeing as this trip was planned on such short notice.”
“Well, that was a bit of a problem, you know. A few people wanted to change their bets when they found out you were taking me to Savannah for a couple days, but Neil wouldn’t let them. They’re all kind of pissed at him.”
“Neil was organizing this?” Adam asked incredulously. “That little bastard.”
“Yeah. But it worked out good. I hadn’t picked a date yet so I’m the only one who’s got today. Last I heard the pool was up to two grand.”
“Jesus Christ, you bet too? Why do I feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t know what’s going on around here?” His tone worried Tommy a little. He sounded kind of put out by it all and Tommy was all of a sudden worried that his feelings had been hurt. Tommy stood in front of Adam and pulled him in for a hug and rested his head against the taller man’s chest.
“You don’t mind, do you? It’s just for fun. They’d all hate it if this upset you.” Tommy looked up at him and winked. “I’ll take you out with my winnings?” He looked up at Adam with a bit of a smirk before pulling his lips down for a light kiss.
Adam sighed and returned it, letting their tongues tangle together while he pulled Tommy in tightly against his body. He smiled and rested his chin on the back of Tommy’s head while he stroked his fingers through his blonde hair. “I suppose it’s good for morale. I just thought I was being very romantic and mysterious with this trip and now.....” he just finished with a shrug. “I wanted it to be special.”
Tommy looked up at him very seriously and stroked his hand along Adams jaw. “It is special.”
Adam finally seemed appeased and kissed Tommy again before pulling him towards the bathroom. “Ok, let’s not waste all Lane’s efforts. I think it’s time for a bath. Get your clothes off right now.”
