Here's my
leverageland Spin Off entry. I'm not sure how much I like/dislike it, but it definitely reflects a lot of my current obsessions.
CHAOS
After one too many run-ins with the Leverage crew, I’ve had enough. It’s time I take matters into my own hands, bring together my own crew, and beat them at their own game. Only this time, they won’t know what hit them.
I can’t work with the same people as before - Ford and his pathetic little team would see me coming a mile away. So I’ll search the country - no, the world - for a team as good as his. No, better than his. We’ll put his team to shame, and they’ll scurry off to work alone like they used to.
CHAOS - HACKER
My name is Colin Mason, but I like to go by Chaos. In fact, call me Colin and I may need to knock your teeth out. Or get my hitter to knock your teeth out for me. And plant viruses in your computer.
That’s right, I’m a hacker. You have the greatest security system ever made? Brilliant: all the more fun for me - and all the more glory when I crack it in a minute flat. You think your computer password is the safest in the world? Guess again, because to me it’s as easy as if your password were simply “password.” So don’t kid yourself into thinking that Alec Hardison is better, because he isn’t.
ACELYNN - GRIFTER
Hi, I’m Acelynn. I like long walks on the beach, singing in the rain, and pretending to be someone I’m not.
My childhood wasn’t the best. I mean, it wasn’t the worst either, but it certainly could’ve been better. You see, my father was a con artist. My mother left him when I was just a little girl - five years old, maybe - but he won custody. Apparently my father can even fool a judge into believing him. But that’s a story for another time.
My father raised me as a grifter. At first, he tried, he really tried, to keep me far away from his business. But eventually he gave up, and he brought me with him. And it worked like a charm. And I’ve been grifting ever since.
MELISSA - HITTER
Name’s Melissa. You’re probably wondering why I’m the “hitter.” Daddy issues, you’re thinking. Or battered woman. String of bad relationships. Always told I’m worth nothing. Physical abuse from family, friends, and lovers.
Well, you’re wrong. In fact, nobody’s ever even tried to hurt me. My dad, although he disapproves of my life choices, still loves me like a father should - from a respectful distance. As for bad relationships - they’re tough to have when you’re the stronger person in the pairing. And no one’s ever dared to tell me I’m not worth anything, or that I’m wrong, or that I disgust them. Some people might think it - prejudices exist, and that isn’t going to change overnight - but no one ever says it.
I’m a hitter because I don’t want to hear it.
CAYLA - MASTERMIND
My name is Cayla. I never wanted to be a part of this life. Until three years ago.
I’d always hear about another thief or grifter being caught on the news, and I’d feel bad for them, and for their families, and I’d wonder how they got into the life in the first place. If they were forced into it out of a need to survive. If their family did it, so they did too. If they simply realized one day that they’d make good outlaws. If they were trying to fight the system the only way they knew how. But I never wanted to be one of them, and I didn’t want to have anything to do with any of them.
My husband, God rest him, was a lawyer. A defense attorney, actually. And he would fight for people like them on a daily basis. Sometimes, he’d even do it for free. He would defend thieves and hackers and grifters, and then he would come home for dinner smiling and leave work at the door. And for a brief time, he was mine. But for most of the day, he was theirs - not one of them, but protecting them nonetheless.
Well, I guess he protected the wrong one, because one day his car exploded. One day, three years ago, I was robbed of my husband. And I’ve been searching for the man who did it ever since. This is just the easiest way to find him - keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.
DWYN - THIEF
Hello. People call me Dwyn - I guess it’s as good a name as any.
Growing up in Wales wasn’t a piece of cake. In fact, I don’t think I even had a piece of cake until I came to America when I was fifteen. And I probably had to steal it.
I was one of . . . many . . . children. Many, many children. Too many mouths to feed, too little money to feed them with, and too few jobs to take. Finally, it got to the point where my mother would send the oldest of on his or her own far too early just to ensure that she could keep food on the younger ones’ plates. Eventually, that “oldest” was me, and at fourteen-and-a-half, I was kicked out of my own house. It wasn’t because they didn’t love me - they just couldn’t afford me.
I spent eight months saving up - stealing, really - until I could afford a ticket to America. I got on a plane, and I never looked back, and I’ve been stealing ever since.
Not because I need to anymore - because I like it.
