At the time, America, basically the embodiment of Capitalism, was fighting against Communism in the Cold War, and therefore the Vietnam War. All around the world, people were protesting against this invasion, especially students who made up a large percentage of the population, due to the lack of contraceptive methods used when soldiers arrived home from the 2nd world war. They thought the amount of violence and bloodshed in Vietnam was unnecessary, and were quite vocal in their opposition. Students staged protests at their university, whilst artists like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and John Lennon sang about it because they couldn’t do anything else.
They wanted peace because everyone, regardless of their political views, sexual preferences or nationality, is human and deserve to be able to live without being persecuted for it. This song represented their ideals, hence the popularity. Basically, they were all a bunch of idealistic, naïve idiots who didn’t understand human nature. Judgement and confrontation are inevitable in society, and this will not change.]
