Massachusetts investigates Blue Law violations
BOSTON (AP) -- Massachusetts' attorney general is going to investigate several supermarkets that were open on Thanksgiving.
The state has Blue Laws over 300 years old that prohibit most stores from doing business on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
The laws were passed in the 1600s to keep colonists at home or in church on those days and on Sundays. Parts of the laws have been repealed. There's no word on what sanctions the stores might face.
The Boston Globe says at least six stores of one chain were open on Thanksgiving. One of them closed after a visit from police.
