It was said that long ago, Odin, the All Father, wishing to gain knowledge of all that was, is and will be, sought out the well that is kept by Mimir under the tree Yggdrasil (for to drink from Mimir's well was to gain great wisdom). A sacrifice was called for by Mimir to drink from the well, and Odin was forced to remove his eye in payment. Odin's sacrifice lies at the bottom of Mimir's well, and looks down on us nightly as the moon over our heads. On the night of the Solstice, the coming of the New Year, the Eye of the All Father winks at us, to give us courage for what lies ahead. Thanks be to the Lord of the Aesir.
