CHARACTER
NAME: Jean-Antoinette "Reinette" Poisson // Mme. de Pompadour
SERIES: Doctor Who
TIMELINE: A few years after Doctor leaves her for the last time, but before she dies.
BACKGROUND: Here for her actual canon, here for what I use to supplement her canon (her history and background and the like), and here for her overarching canon.
ABILITIES: No abilities differing from those of a normal human.
PERSONALITY: Despite having been born into a bourgeois family (her mother was a well-known prostitute), Reinette is a driven, well-educated woman. Her (rumoured) illegitimate father funded her rather expensive education, in which she was taught to memorize entire plays by heart, as well as to be well versed in the arts of singing, dancing, acting, and musicianship (she plays the clavichord). She is very charismatic, skilled and educated in charming men. Her ambition is shown clearly by a conversation with a friend. Upon hearing that the King's current mistress is ailing, she speaks of her aim to be his next mistress.
Reinette, though having no direct influence in political events, is still very politically minded, and said to have, despite her position as mistress of the king, advocated and supported various treaties and candidates. Many even blame her for the Treaty of Versailles, which led to France's participation in the Seven Years' War. Her influence over the King is said to have been greater than that of the Queen's. She counted amongst her advisors and friends Voltaire and was famous for the great intellectual salons she held both before and after her placement in Versailles. She even made friends with the last woman you'd expect - the Queen. While all other mistresses had snubbed the Queen, Reinette befriended her, respecting and knowing how important still was the relationship between the King and the Queen. Even when her life was endangered by the clockwork men, she still sent Louis to the Queen's side instead, saying: "You have your duties. I am you mistress; go to your Queen."
She is intuitive and passionate, as well as brave - even in the face of death at the hands of the clockwork men, with knives at her throat, she looks them in the eye and tells them that she does not fear them, for they are only the work of a childhood nightmare. And even when the clockwork men have found her and taken the entire court hostage, she is the one that keeps her cool. When all others are screaming and running, Reinette takes charge of the situation, reminding all that they are in attendance of the royal court, and that such behaviour, such commotion does not belong there. Despite the fact that is her head the clockwork men are after, she remains the calmest in the room. She was the same as a child. Even as the monster under her bed stands before her, rather than run and scream, she faces it and questions why it wants her.
She can be very forward, having kissed the Doctor only on their third meeting (though several years had passed between these meetings, and Reinette had since become a woman). She explains that he is no stranger to her; they have known each other her whole life. And she unafraid of speaking her mind, telling the Doctor how impolite he is for never aging, while it has been years since she has last seen him. She sees the Doctor again on the night of the Yule Ball, the night when she first meets the King. She asks the Doctor to dance, and though the Doctor refuses, Reinette insists, intending to make the King jealous first. (Dancing, in Doctor Who, is often used as a metaphor for sex, so ah-)
Knowing the Doctor does not belong on the slow path with her, or at all, she shows him the fireplace, telling him he is not "going nowhere". She knows she is risking his loss by showing him the fireplace, and when he asks her to wish him luck, she refuses. He returns to his time, and though he promises to take her with him, by the time he returns, so many years have passed in her world that he returns shortly after her death. Though logic tells her she will never see the Doctor again, as with everything has happened to her despite logic, she still hopes for his return. Louis tells to Doctor she often spoke of him, hoping he would visit again. After all, the Doctor is the only man, save her King, that she ever loved. And it because of her love for him that she made the sacrifice to send him back.
In her final letter to the Doctor, she reveals having learned from him that "all things are possible," and her life reflects this attitude. Reinette was an extremely accomplished woman, "actress, artist, musician, dance, courtesan, fantastic gardener..." She was incredibly committed to the King, spending her life ensuring his happiness. She accompanied him when he hunted, arranged celebrations for him, and even arranged lesser mistresses as she began to age. Even after they ceased being lovers, she maintained her friendship with and commitment to him.
STATUS: New arrival.
