Let's see if you guys would've done the same thing as me...
I had a quiz in my Torts class on Friday. The last question (I'm not going to copy the exact question because I'm paranoid and it might be some sort of honor code violation, but it's not like anyone in my classes does/can read what's posted here) was in this format:
15. The best tasting dessert to you is ______________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.
My answer looked like this:
15. The best tasting dessert to you is chocolate cake_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.
My answer was marked wrong and I lost two points (all of the credit for that question). I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who was confused by the grade they got on this question, because a classmate asked the prof when we were going over the quiz what constituted a correct answer. He said that a correct answer would look like this:
15. The best tasting dessert to you is The best tasting dessert to me is chocolate cake_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.
How should I have known from the form of the question that he wanted me to write a whole new sentence as opposed to just finishing the sentence already given? Had it been written "What is the best tasting dessert to you?" Then I would have written a complete sentence. Questions 13 and 14 were both short answer questions as well, and they were actual questions that ended in question marks. I got full credit on those questions.
Now, this professor doesn't know me. I'm one of about 80 people in my class. I spoke with him briefly during orientation, but not in anyway that identified me over the crowd. So what I'm trying to say is that I have no reason to believe that I'm getting special treatment, good or bad. The reason I'm saying this is because on my quiz (and on the quiz of other people) in large (1 inch high) letters next to the multiple choice questions I got wrong, the word 'bad' is written. Granted, next to the short answer questions 13 and 14 the word 'good' is written in similar fashion.
Last I checked writing crap like that (BAD) on people's papers makes you an asshole. Gee...a law professor an asshole?! So why does it bother me even though I'm completely aware that this guy is a jerk? Maybe it's because he can treat me badly and there's shit I can do about it. I'm not really a fan of being in positions where I'm out of control of my own wellbeing, even if it is in a tiny situation like this one.
What I'm trying to say is: WTF.
I'm also trying to say that I'm sort of discouraged because I've been working as hard as I can and I have crap to show for it (even if it is the first grade I've received). I know this is not new for law students. This is why they snap and this is also why a lot of the students are alcoholics.
If I become an alcoholic you'll know what happened.
I'd write more, but I have reading/studying to do.
