It's the regret couched in terms of "i wish i'd read their minds/sekrit signals/morse sex code properly" as opposed to "i wish they'd said they wanted me clearly" that I'm responding to.

I was trying to be funny, but "i wish they'd said they wanted me clearly" is indeed a much better description of how I feel. I can never know for sure what someone is thinking, so when I'm told "no", I take that to mean "no".
