so long Uncle Lou

Sep 13, 2004 00:51

so, to wrap up one of the shittier weekends in recent memory, my 91 year old uncle passed away this morning. not like it was a big suprise to anyone outside the family, but you have to understand, this was Uncle Lou. a man truly impossible to explain without the pleasure, and i do mean pleasure, of meeting him. he was the youngest 91 year old i ever knew. he was the patriarch of the remaining sullivan clan. there was no one better. he had knee replacements at 85 and 87, had a girlfriend in florida and was scheduled to have a shoulder replaced. he was a fishing boat captain when he was young and old, he was in the navy and worked in the baltimore shipyards. he married not one but two women named edna, and the first was truly the love of his life. a man who needed less help at 90 than most 50 year olds i know. he was the greatest of the great. larger than life. never forgot a name or a face, and always had a piece of candy for a great-nephew whenever he came to visit. born in 1911, he saw the invention of the television, the internet, computers, practically the printing press. he had the sharpest mind of anyone i've ever seen - even ben or bob. i hadn't seen him in a little while, but he was ALWAYS in my thoughts.

i've always thought and felt that my grandfathers (one was Uncle Lou's brother) kind of watched over me. now it feels like the end of return of the jedi - i have my own anikin, obi-wan, and yoda guiding me. i love you Uncle Lou. even at 91, you left us too soon. goodnight, sleep well, and i'll see you when i get there.

goodnight everyone. stay safe.

I'm 15 for a moment
Caught in between 10 and 20
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
I'm 22 for a moment
She feels better than ever
And we're on fire
Making our way back from Mars
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to lose
15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
I'm 33 for a moment
Still the man, but you see I'm a they
A kid on the way
A family on my mind
I'm 45 for a moment
The sea is high
And I'm heading into a crisis
Chasing the years of my life
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy, Time to lose yourself
Within a morning star
15 I'm all right with you
15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
Half time goes by
Suddenly you’re wise
Another blink of an eye
67 is gone
The sun is getting high
We're moving on...
I'm 99 for a moment
Dying for just another moment
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
15 there's still time for you
22 I feel her too
33 you’re on your way
Every day's a new day...
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to choose
Hey 15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
