So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish

so, i got a new ipod video for christmas. probably the coolest gift i've ever gotten. i have every song Bob Dylan and blues traveler ever put on domestic cd, the movie hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, a rangers shootout, and about 2,500 other songs, podcasts and audio clips. it's not half full yet...

so, now my dilemma is trying to figure out what movies to put on it for the honeymoon plane flight. i want to put on batman begins, underworld 2 and hudson hawk (classic bruce willis movie. if you haven't seen it, i HIGHLY recommend it. freeking hysterical) but it's also going to be july, so obviously a lot more movies will be out. anyone have any recommendations? things i should be on the lookout for? keep in mind Chrissy will probably be watching them with me...

switching gears entirely.....

i finally found one of my favorite songs. it's a song called hallelujah. originally written and performed by rufus wainwright, this version is by jeff buckley. it's used in the movie shreck, but the first time i heard it was on west wing. (*west wing dork moment*) there is an episode where a foreign dignitary from israel (i think) was returning to israel (i think) with former defense secretary fitzwallace on board, and the plane was shot down. in retaliation, President Bartlett had to make the decision to assassinate the leader of kumar (a fictional country representative of possibly saudi arabia or iran or possibly the palestinians)who was thought to be responsible. the decision turns out to be the most difficult one of his presidency. the decision is made at a theater with Bartlett and Leo. the way that the cinematic is probably most poignant. it switches back and forth from the plane landing to Bartlet and Leo, to the kumari dictator back to Bartlett and Leo looking indescribably pained, back to the dictator being shot. through the whole sequence, the song hallelujah is playing.

i told you that story so i could tell you this one....

ever think that sometimes people are put here for a purpose? like there is something specific that they have to do; as soon as they have done what they are here to do, they die? most people are not in this category, but i really feel that some are. jeff buckley fits this category. a great word to describe his version of hallelujah is haunting. powerfull. honest. shortly after recording the album "grace" jeff buckley died at the age of 30 in a drowning accident. not to desecrate the memory of the dead, but i've heard the rest of that album and some other songs that he was working on before he died that have since been released, and they are pretty terrible.... maybe it's that the album was released in 1994 - a very strange time for music and musicians, and i just don't get it. totally possible. but maybe, just maybe, jeff buckley was here to sing that one song. the way it was meant to be sung. and then he was finished. i know i think about strange things, but it's these little mysteries that keep me going. next time you're stuck home or have extra time, start thinking about something nutty, and see what you come up with.

in one of those moods, if you couldn't tell. i think it's the snow.
