(I had actually planned on doing this a bit earlier...)
Eyes for LiesI really enjoy crime stories, but this is kind of a fresh take on it. Eyes for Lies is a pseudonymous blogger who is a bona-fide human lie detector, like on "Lie to Me". She blogs about crime news, and what she thinks are signs of deception in people. She is unfortunately right quite a bit. She's very open about how she does her thing, and it sounds very common-senseical when she tells you what she's doing, and I like when she challenges her readers to give their own interpretation. The comments section can be fun.
Old NavyWhy? Why won't you sell your fat girl clothes in the stores? Why do you make so many inexpensive and adorable things, and force me to shop online? Why do you taunt me with your 'short' length pants, with the perfect inseam, only available on the web? This is the only place in the world where I can buy a pair of pants that are supposed to be for short people, and not have to hem them up myself.
SalonMy favorite opinion journal, but the best thing about Salon is Saturday mornings, when I catch up on the
Friday Night Seitz slideshow by their film critic, Matt Zoller Seitz. Last week's was great car chases, and included basically the entire car chase from Death Proof, which still think is the most kick ass car chase ever filmed, so there.
Pandagon/
Slacktivist/
Balloon Juice/AlicublogI read these four blogs every single day. I read Pandagon because I think Amanda Marcotte is fascinating and has interesting thoughts and I don't always agree but I like her writing a lot. I read Slacktivist because Fred's a goddamn genius and that's all there is to it. I read Balloon Juice because--well, interestingly I didn't used to, because the writer was a Republican/Libertarian and kind of an asshole, and one day I saw him approvingly linked on another blog and had to backtrack to discover some time previously he had switched allegiance. Now Balloon Juice has a group of contributors posting regularly, and I like the array of topics they cover. Alicublog is my go-to for the wingnut temperature, Roy's sort of my personal filter who reads the right-leaning blogs so I don't have to.
GoogleIt is my homepage, it is my favorite thing, it is so indispensable to me that when making this list, I almost forgot about the page, as I have stopped thinking of it as a site I GO to, so much as my default setting for the Internet. My passion for Google is, unlike my passion for so many other things, is not about the aesthetic, although I adore the changing Google logos (winner: Pacman anniversary). The draw is it's PURPOSE, it's just relentlessly fucking useful. My email, the latest in film, the weather, news stories, everything is just right there.
