we've got obsessions

"A real diehard, indestructible, irresolvable obsession in a poet is nothing less than a blessing."
-Tony Hoagland, Real Sofistikashun

Here, Tony talks about how obsession isn't a negative thing to the writer, but actually, something to be embraced. A balanced relationship should be made with the object of obsession, whatever it may be, and the writer has in his or her grasp, a goldmine.

I can agree with this. My droughts are at their worst when I've lost the capacity to feel strongly about things I once felt very close to. Or, in general, a feeling of apathy. So terrible.
I would rather be the sick dog following a person around, sniffing at their shoes.

However, it usually doesn't take long to become enamored with certain things. I suppose my most fruitful subject matter lately has revolved around the urban. Right in the heart of some downtown.

The events this past Thanksgiving are write-worthy. I feel like there was an appropriate amount of tension, confession, unsolved mysteries to compose a few poems as well as the surprise of seeing all that snow and having a completely new kind of Thanksgiving than ever before. Without driving all over the damned place to visit family.

Lately, I've begun to recognize my relationship to writing, how it has suffered in the past two years. It isn't something you can sit down and just do seamlessly after working a shitty job all that time, having no energy to dispel toward this.

I'm feeling less lonely now. Sandy said in an email that on a 1-10 scale--1 being most superficial and 10 being most intimate-- we expect to jump into a 7/8 relationship with people, but the reality is that we usually begin around 2.
I know that this will be a treasured time in my life. That there won't be any other time when things are so simple. So I should cherish it. Fix what is broken and keep rolling with the punches.

Three more weeks and I'll go home for a visit. I can't wait to wander around downtown. See all the pretty lights, drink hot drinks and watch hot movies.
