ok here’s what we’re doing in my vic studies class: we handed in our term papers in two copies. one copy goes to the professor, and the other copy goes to the library. then each student must go to the library and borrow and edit six papers. this can create a kind of conversation in the margins between editors. out of curiosity i decided to get my own paper out to look at the comments. i found something amazing.

here’s the offending sentence:
“At one point the reviewer states that in order to find the age of Adam, one must find the age of the mastodon.”

an arrow from the word “mastodon,” ---> term-define?
under that: Agreed. What is it? Ha.
Under that: There is no need to define this term. One should look it up in the dictionary if they don’t know what a mastodon is.
Under that: A scientific term in a non-scientific paper (something) when it’s necessary for the meaning it should be defined.

who the hell doesn’t know what a mastodon is. these are the same kids who were tripped up by the word “intelligentsia.”

roar.
