I lost two clients this week...out of the three that I had. One was so mad that when she was dressed, she went up to the membership office and cancelled her membership. (Not mad at me, mind, but at they Y.) I'll be seeing both of these ladies privately, but you can bet this is going in the letter I'm writing to attach to my two weeks' notice.
I also did some poking around on the Department of Commerce site. (They oversee our licenses.) I knew my personal license needed renewed in June, but I hadn't realized the site license did too. What do you want to bet they're hoping the program will be gone by then so they don't have to?
Then I got to looking at the site license. According to the DCCA, the Y's site license is 'TERMINATED; NEEDS TO REAPPLY'. They also say that it expired in '86, which is about 10 years before HI had a license law though, so I'm confused. But you can bet your sweet bippy that I'm going to call tomorrow and find out! If they're not licensed, *I* can get in trouble for working for them, which is the last thing I need.
I also don't think this new room was ever inspected/approved. In fact, I'm sure it wasn't, because according to the statutes I was reading last night, there has to be both ventilation and running water *in the room*, and there's neither. Granted, yes, the ladies' locker room is 10' down the hall and I can wash my hands there, but still.
The bad thing is I really like the Y. I like the place, I like the people (members and coworkers, not management) and I like the friendly neighborhood feel. All I can say is I've learned a lot about how to run--and how not to run--a massage studio in the last couple years. It's just too bad no one has the balls to say, "We don't want a massage program anymore. Here's a nice reference letter and your two weeks' notice. Have a nice life."
In other (good, for a change) massage news, the ARC says there's still a lot left in the grant that pays me, and can I start back again in January? Why yes, yes I can.
