Title:  Simpler days
Day/Theme:30/I am remembering you
Series: Avatar the Last Airbender
Character: Zuko Introspective
Rating: G - set post series

Sometimes, after all the seemingly endless and mindless court sessions which he has to preside over, after all the haggling over the reparations to the other three nations that Fire nation troops had pillaged in the war, after all the sitting still and listening to the half a million old and surprisingly feisty goats demanding this and that from him, from his country, its nice to just firmly shoo them all out of the room and lock the doors.

Thank the Gods that he managed to pry Uncle Iroh, who had all but ensconced himself in his Jasmine Dragon back in Ba Sing Sei, out of the Tea house and back to help mop up this mess.

Thank the Gods that he hasn’t quite snapped at anyone yet.  Although they all know that there are days he comes close to flaming some rather hard headed idiots; and no, flaming in the Fire Nation would probably not just be restricted to the metaphorical either.

Thank the Gods he hasn’t.  That would be a path he’d rather die than go down.  He’d like to think he’s learned something from his father after all.

Even if sometimes, it’s terribly hard.

Which is why sometimes, its good to doff the ceremonial robes for a lighter, simpler pair of pants and vest.  To reach for the paired dao hanging just behind the throne.

Its good to be able to let muscle memory take him through the sword drills that he used to practice as a child, but without the pressure to excel if only to gain a father’s recognition, without the pressure having to fighting desparately to stay alive against people who would sooner have the gold on his head than have his head remain on his shoulders.

To remember the simpler days.  Even if they do happen to come laced with pain, frustration and anger.  To remember the past, so as to avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future.
