I am moving back to my house. The tenants are gone, and we are renovating the basement for my homeschool/playroom, and putting an office in the garage for Brian. We have been back and forth moving slowly from our apartment in Orangeville to our old home in Oshawa.
Before leaving Orangeville, we repainted the stucco ceiling in the boys' room because they had drawn in crayon on the stucco ceiling in their room, which they can easily reach because they have a bunk bed. When looking up online what to do about removing their graffiti, I found out that stucco ceilings in homes from the 70s and 80s often contain asbestos. Not an issue in our apartment, which was built only 15 years ago, but our 1970s Oshawa home has stucco ceilings all over it, most worryingly, in the boys' bedroom, where they will have access to it because of the bunk bed. And believe me, I have to change those sheets way too often because of stucco crumbs all over them. It's just impossible to keep a 5- and 3-year-old from playing with the oh-so-temptingly available and accessible ceiling!
So before putting in the boys' bunk bed, we had our Oshawa home tested for asbestos. Two places in the basement, because of the reno, and three samples from the boys' ceiling. Basement is clean, but the stucco is positive. So now, we have to decide whether to have a removal company come in and get rid of it, which would mean goodbye basement reno, goodbye Brian's office. Or try to drywall over the stucco in the boys' room. Or just put the boys in twin beds where they can't mess with the ceiling.
Oh well. I'd rather know than not.
