Character Information
General
Canon Source: One Piece
Canon Format: Manga
Character's Name: Portgas D. Ace [Gol D. Ace (SPOILER)], also known as "Fire Fist" Ace
Character's Age: 20
Netvice:
Log Pose - it’s an accessory like a wristwatch, with a spherical, transparent dome in place of the watch face and a little needle that points out directions from one island to the next. It’s like a compass, but it runs off of a different magnetism. As a netvice, voice will seem to come out of nowhere while video shows up on the log pose’s orb. Similarly, holographic messages will be broadcast directly above it. For text messages, a small keyboard (much like one that would be found on a cellphone) will pop out of the right side of the log pose so that Ace may type. Any received texts will appear on the orb and the keypad may be used to scroll and such to read longer messages.
Abilities
First and foremost, Ace has a very well-trained body. The twenty year old is in peak condition. He’s much faster and stronger than the average person is, and also quite flexible. He finds crouched, compact positions to be very comfortable whereas many might feel cramped or distorted in some way. He’s also able to pull off impressive leaps and flips, as well as other moves related to general defense or physical combat.
In other words, Ace is very capable of taking care of himself naturally in a brawl. But of course this is not enough for Ace, who also possesses the power of flame. After eating a cursed “devil fruit,” Ace acquired the ability to create, control, and become fire. He is, in essence, composed of the element now. His fire-based attacks are dangerous, and as varying as whatever ways he can think of to use the flame (a named list of most attacks revealed in the series can be found
here to give you an idea of his power).
Ace’s signature move, which he was nicknamed "Fire Fist Ace" after, consists of him morphing his hand into fire and using it to launch a large fire “fist” at his target(s). When he transforms entirely into a cloud of fire, Ace is able to take flight to some extent, as his body is no longer restricted by gravity. Similarly, turning his torso and legs into fire grants him a “boost” of sorts when he performs extended jumps and acrobatic maneuvers in the air.
Not only is Ace able to manipulate fire to his will, but he is nearly impossible to harm since he can shift his body into fire to allow weapons and strikes to pass right through him. There are exceptions to his metaphysical defense, of course, such as things hotter than fire (i.e. magma), or seastone and the ocean. If either of the latter come into contact with his body, his inner flame is essentially snuffed out, leaving him powerless and weakened. As a result, Ace is unable to swim despite being a pirate, but he still does not fear the sea.
Weapons: He keeps a dagger at his hip that he never makes use of in battle, preferring to fight with his own physical/fire power.
History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History:
Wikia.
Point in Canon: As of April 29, 2011, Ace has been updated to the end of chapter 574.
He first arrived March 22, 2010, from the flashback in chapter 552. This made him around 17 years old and head of the Spade pirates. He had just been brought on board Whitebeard's ship where he tried day after day to assassinate the captain. He had not spoken with Marco about "Pops" yet and he did not have the Whitebeard tattoo nor their affiliation.
Character Personality:
Even before he was born, Ace was destined to be a trouble-maker and a changer of the tides. Starting at a very young age, and due to his parentage, he had a tumultuous mindset filled with hate, anger, and despair. Ace was often in trouble for picking fights with adults in which he actually wished to kill them but lacked the strength to accomplish the feat. He lived constantly questioning his own existence and whether or not it would have been better if he had never been born at all.
His blood father is his greatest shame, considered a demon, hated or feared by most, and causing Ace to live with grief despite disowning his father's name. If Ace had to honestly tell his biggest crime, it would be being born to that person.
After meeting Luffy thanks to fate having them grow up together, Ace becomes protective of him; the two become brothers and swear to live their lives free, without regret. This is a promise which keeps Ace motivated in uncovering the answer that plagues him (Should I really have been born?). He is extremely loyal to Luffy, and worries for him a great deal. Once he leaves home to sail the sea under the flag of piracy, this loyalty extends to the crew he gathers, the Spade pirates.
It is obvious that Ace has always had trouble dealing with authority and would rather do things his own way. The fiery pirate hates to show weakness and often lashes out angrily when someone tries to help him. This is sometimes a protective defense (Ace will try to chase away people with good intentions to keep them from being hurt for his sake) and other times merely his obstinacy making itself known.
He possesses a very stubborn nature and a temper that, once provoked, is as tenacious as it is fierce. This is particularly obvious when he makes over one hundred attempts to take Whitebeard’s life before he joins their crew. Even when things aren’t going his way, he refuses to give up, and faces forward with a respectable fearlessness. This can, of course, be a terrible thing for his well-being or for the well-being of his comrades. He never wishes harm to befall anyone else, though, especially his “family” (Luffy, his crewmates), and will always put their safety ahead of his own. Ace is a powerful fighter, but, even if the odds happen to be against him and he knows it, he will still think nothing of risking his life to protect those he cares about or avenge them for some wrongdoing.
Because of his strength and abilities, Ace is generally laidback and not easily intimidated. He may have grown up desolate, but most are not aware of the troubles that plague him. Nowadays, Ace is generally polite and favorable, with a sly intelligence that becomes known in the way he teases both friend and enemy alike. His strong mischievous streak suits his boyish, freckled face, and often leads to him joking with and playing pranks upon people whom he feels comfortable with. Since he is so nonchalant about confrontations, he tends to do the same thing with his enemies, but in a decidedly more threatening way. Be wary.
He enjoys making friends, and he enjoys partying with them even more. To him, nothing says “new BFFs!” quite like a strong barrel of grog and a hearty meal. Even though he is more than capable of being sociable, Ace is also good at surviving as a loner, since fate decided to mature his mind at a young age. It should be noted that Ace finds it difficult to really connect with the people he befriends, though this is never apparent in his words and actions. When he aged, he learned to better contain his inner turmoil and fool others with his lively mask; ironic, as he only lives to question WHY he lives at all.
He is true to himself, protective of his brother, and unwavering in his loyalty (especially to Whitebeard, after he joins the man’s crew) above all else. Ace is a pirate, yes, with a reputation growing more fearsome each day, but he is a good person. Life dealt him a cruel hand of cards which he has struggled to cope with since childhood and, all-in-all, he has handled it to the best of his abilities.
At this point, Ace is still looking for the answer to his life, an answer to the question he wondered since childhood: “Should I have been born?”
He hasn’t quite come to terms with the fact that he wants a father. Only, instead of one whose dark infamy haunts him, the young man desires a father who doesn’t bring disappointment, pain, hate, or biting anger with the mere mention of his name; what Ace wants above all else is what any other person would want: love, and a father to be proud of. Until he accepts this problem with himself, fathers will be a touchy subject to him and he’s likely to be crankier than normal until he calms down completely from his confrontation with Whitebeard.
A few of his quirks include his massive appetite and his habit of falling asleep in awkward places without warning (such as face-first in his dinner plate). Ace suffers from narcolepsy which causes him to konk out in the middle of conversations, meals, etc. often leaving people wondering whether or not he abruptly died.
Character Plans: While he will be pleased to find that he is no longer on that accursed Moby Dick ship with the Whitebeard pirates, Ace will obviously be wondering where the hell he is at now and if the other pirates ditched him at some random port after tiring of his constant attempts to slay Whitebeard. His ex-crew ought to be well taken-care of as part of the Whitebeard pirates, so he’ll be most concerned with finding a way to get himself back out on the sea. He’ll just be going with the flow, for the most part.
Ace will not be expecting to meet anyone he knows here, so running into Luffy will be a shock. Not to mention that Luffy will be more grown-up than when Ace last saw him. He also will not know any of Luffy’s crew, as he has not met them yet in his timeline.
Appearance: Ace is tall (6'1"/185cm), with a very fit build, a boyishly freckled face (which is quite good at expressing Ace’s emotions, when he allows them to show), and unruly, black hair in a shaggy, middle-parted style that falls around his ears and cheekbones. He wears black knee-length shorts, tall black boots, and many accessories. Most notable would be a bright orange cowboy hat with faces on the front and red beads around the top (Marco replaced his hat in summer of '10 and he had fun redecorating it).
On his left arm is a tattoo which says "ASCE" with the S x'd out.
