Kiyo Sushi

Yesterday morning, I heard on the radio that it was the 23rd straight day of rain in Vancouver and that we are well on our way to breaking a record set in 1953 - 28 straight days of rain.  Now this doesn't mean the rain is non-stop.  We do get periods of cloudy skies once in a while, but just when I think we're going to get a rain-free day, it rains. And now it's day 24. What else can I do but eat?

I'm still steadily plowing my way through my backlog of reviews.  December 29 was a quick lunch at Kiyo Sushi.  This place was our original choice for dinner a couple of nights before when, due to the long wait for a table, we ended up at Nan-Chuu instead.  Kiyo Sushi has a reputation for being a hidden gem, so I was quite excited to try their fare.  The place looked like a typical casual Japanese eatery.  Bright yellow lights, simple clean furnishings.

We started with the tuna gomaae.  It sounded interesting on the menu.  Tuna marinated in sesame.  It was good, but I wasn't very impressed.  I didn't think it was anything special, and I had enjoyed the quality of the salmon sahimi at Nan-Chuu more.  Not that it's fair to compare salmon to tuna, but that's how it is.   It's just that the salmon semed so much fresher while the texture of this tuna was a bit too soft for me.  Maybe it's because it was marinated?  It was good anyway and I wouldn't mind eating it again.

The Kiyo Assorted Sushi arrived next.  Again, it was okay.  Adequate and tasty enough, but not really as good as I was expecting.  It was perfectly satisfactory sushi.  Good for a return visit when one is in the mood for Japanese food, but then again, places like that are a dime a dozen here.  Maybe it was an off day?  Or maybe I should stop going to restaurants wth high expectations so I can be pleasantly surprised, haha.

We also ordered the chicken teriyaki and tempura combination. Now this was a good dish.  The chicken teriyaki was meltingly tender and the sauce was not too sweet.  The tempura was lightly fried just the way I like it. This is one thing I cannot get in Manila.  For some weird reason, the tempura in Manila is never fried lightly enough.  I don't know why. Maybe it's the batter they use?  The oil?  Anyway, Vancouver has the best tempura I've tasted and it's really spoiled me for any other.

So Kiyo Sushi did not meet expectations, but it was okay.  A standard sushi place that I might visit again, but it's not really on my list of go-to places. I guess there are places of equivalent quality around here that are closer to my home in case I'm in need of a quick sushi fix.  Which these days is looking more and more likely.
