This week, Rachel gets unnecessarily excited over the Welsh Assembly and wonders if Pippa Middleton's bottom will have its own Top Trumps card...
Is it a bird? is it a plane?...
I got excited earlier this week, when it was announced on Twitter that the Queen was opening the new session of the Welsh Assembly and that it had 'new powers.' I immediately imagined cool and exciting things, such as you might find on your average Superhero. Wales is, after all, home to a rugby team that would make even Superman wobble in his Y-fronts (see what I did there?), so why wouldn't it have a roster of awesome super-powers at its disposal?
Possible Welsh Superpowers:
Ninja Singing
Killer Leeks
Nuclear-powered Shirley Bassey
Incredibly Manic Street Preachers
...and I'll stop now before I'm banned from the Principality.
So it was very sad to read that Wales does not actually, have a raft of superpowers (other than Gavin Henson's chest). It was all very boring and to do with being able to make their own laws on health and education. I really think governments are missing a trick here, if countries did have their own superpowers, then the United Nations could bring out there own kick-ass set of Top Trumps!* Oh my goodness they've brought out a Royal Wedding set.(see link at the bottom).
Oh but hang on, Wales is already home to Captain Jack Harkness and Torchwood is buried under Cardiff, so they have all the superpower they need...
Isn't there some automatic renewal for this?
I was a bit perplexed this week to read that Doctor Who had been "recommissioned", as I'd sort of got it into my head that it would be an automatic thing. It would be a brave person indeed who ever cancelled Doctor Who again. I would imagine said person would need to find a TARDIS and leave the planet. Doctor Who fans on the warpath would make your average religious nut look like a Carebear.
We get a full series of 14 episodes with Matt Smith, although can I just say that splitting this current series into two blocks has not gone down well with me. I like my sci-fi in nice regular chunks please, with no breaks.
What? Still no Unobtainium?
And science news, that's they have added two new elements to the Periodic Table, but you're not really going to get a look at them any time soon. I quote:
"The elements are currently unnamed, but they are both highly radioactive and exist for less than a second before decaying into lighter atoms."
They exist for less than a second? Well perhaps the new elements should be called Xfactorwinnerscareer and Eurovisionsongcontesthope
...And we say goodbye to...
Roy Skelton, who, for an entire generation of British children, will forever be remembered as the voice of George and Zippy on Rainbow.
All together now
"Up above the streets and houses, rainbow climbing high..."
And that's the world on Wednesday 8th June 2011
