Rock-aBye baby

I have heard of the tune of this lullaby for a long time. Never though of to ask for the lyric. I was shock when David told me what it is about.
Why would anyone sing a lullaby with the meaning that the baby will fall with the cradle???

Rock-a-Bye Baby
Rock-a-bye baby, in the tree top
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock
When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall
And down will come baby, cradle and all
