No beggar Halloween

I have been living in apartment until this year. There is no beggar at the apartment building especially when the building is locked by double doors. In the past few years, I spent every beggar’s night at
braider’s place handing out candies with the ladies. Those beggars were lucky enough to get not one, but three candies at once. And we got to spend time to have some girls’ talk.
Now I am in my own house. I was looking forward for the beggars’ night even David doesn’t agree I get a big pumpkin to put at the front door.
Any way, I still got some nice candies. Turned on the porch light. Looking forward to hand out candies.
That day we had lunch with a friend who was leaving. And the conversation was going so much that we decided to invite her over for dinner.
The beggars were supposed to come between 6 to 8. And our friend came at 6. And our friend was eager to get us in costumes. We had a very nice dinner. The conversation was going so well that it went on until 11. But there was no beggar, not a single one.
I am not sure it is because of the neighborhood or there are some other strange reason. The average age of my block is around 50~60, and there is no one at that age because they are either much younger (that’s us at 30s), or much older (over 80s). The average drop dramatically when the old lady past away in spring at the age of 93. Then this summer, the young graduate student couple next door moved away that we become the only people under age of 40.
There is not a single kid live in this block. We wonder if the beggar would even bother to come to this block for candies.
But then the next day, David brought home the story that professor hand out candies to their class because there was no beggar on Halloween night. Seems like there is some strange reason that keep the beggars coming for candies.
Now I am not sure if I have put out a pumpkin, would we have getting some beggars?
