Yeah. 2009 and I only just discovered the 'Verse within the past couple of years, and only heard about the Can't Stop the Serenity screenings last fall... which of course means I missed the last run of them. Last year, for Halloween, true to form, I spent all of my time making my best friend a nearly-screen-accurate Heath Ledger's "Joker" costume... and still somehow had the energy to turn myself into Penny from Act III of Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog. So this summer, after a year to think on it, I've made a decision: I'm going to CTtS next week as Kaylee.
Aside from the Joker costume I made, I'm not a stickler for screen accuracy. I think part of the point of costuming is to really get into the mindset of that character and figure out what they'd wear, and not what they've already worn. In pops in my blue jumpsuit. I've got it stashed in my closet from a recent NERF war, and I'm thinking I'll turn the bottom half into a Kaylee-mechanic costume... and the top half into a Dharma Initiative/LOST costume... just in case. If I've got one jumpsuit, I'm going to make the most out of it. I've also got a couple of parasols on hand, though I may get one to paint for this occasion. I have a pair of shoes that look very... future-engine-room-y to me, and are going to be perfect. And a wrench... for obvious reasons. According to the Shindig commentary, Shawna Trpcic was going to try to get Kaylee into some flamingo socks - this might be the perfect opportunity! Now all I really need is a quirky shirt and a fun hair-do and I think I'll be good to go.
Of course, my other thought was to wear my Penny costume under the jumpsuit and have both... but I think I've decided against that.
I guess really this is my introduction to the group - hi folks! - and the best way I can introduce myself to fellow costumers is to talk about costumes, right? So if you have any thoughts about my Kaylee costume, let me know. I really can't wait to start playing with this and see where she takes me.
Thanks, folks! Pictures to follow!
