Don’t know what the hell it is, but it’s got a hold of my boat. Serenity is nigh on ripping herself apart trying to get free of the gravity well. River’s combing through the Cortex looking for some information, but there shouldn’t be a black hole here. I’m not that bad of a pilot. I learned from the best, watching Wash, and I’ve been doing just fine handling Serenity with River as my co-pilot.
“We ain’t off course. Where in the sphincter of Hell did that come from?” I grit my teeth, and punch more controls as if hitting them harder will make my girl fly faster and stronger.
“Captain!” I hear Kaylee shouting through the comm. “We’re goin’ to go belly up. Serenity can’t take this. She’s goin’ to die.”
“No she ain’t. My ship don’t die.” Fuck!
“Let go, Mal.” River looks over at me with that funny look she gets when she’s seeing things no one else can. “Fighting it will kill us. Ride the waves, don’t fight against them.”
“Easy for you to say! Fine then!” I glare at the yawning mass of glittering wrong that’s marring the beauty of the Black. “You goin’ to eat us. You jung chi duh go-se dway. Well then hope we give you a belly ache.”
I want to close my eyes. All around me I can hear Serenity fighting to survive. The bulkheads are buckling, red lights flashing all over the gorram bridge, and there ain’t a thing River or I can do about it. If I still believed in God, I might be praying right now.
Times like this I miss Book. He’d’ve been praying enough for all of us.
I can almost hear Wash telling me we’re all going to die, and this time I think he’s right.
