Hey sweetie - I sat down and watched the Bill O'Rilley vid you linked and I think as much as we may hate his opinion, it is one that was shared by many people out there at the time. I think the problem people have in reconciling this case (at least initially) is that this was a teenage boy, one who had opportunities and we just DON'T GET how something like that life can be made to seem the only alternative. Shawn wasn't a "kid" like Stephen was, and people can't understand a teenager not running. Fear and resignation can make things seem hopeless. And you are highlighting this so well in this fic.

The thing that struck me more than anything in the O'Rilley vid is the way the opinion changed when the facts came out. Whether it was a legit change or not, I don't know, but I hope so. It just sucks that it takes reading graphic reports to believe that the situation was so dire that Shawn felt he had no choice

This is maybe going to sound like I'm ranting at you a little, but I promise I'm not, because you are awesome and kickass and I agree completely with everything you said. You just got me thinking, and suddenly I'm more angry at O'Reily than I was before haha. This is all at Bill, I swear :)

I definitely agree with you that what he thought was definitely thought by a lot of people, which is likely why he said it. He's one of those personalities whose fans like him because he "tells it like it is" but all that means in this case is that he says what an uneducated public thinks is legitmate because they don't know better, and he's a journalist so he should know better. He has a responsiblity to research what he talks about and present people with facts, not to run into a story with a lot of unsubstantiated opinions ( ... )

I suppose you're right in not classifying him as a journalist. I know he studied journalism at one point, but it doesn't sit well with me at all to put him in the same category as people whose reporting and political commentary I respect (whether I agree with it or not). Sticking him with the Jerry Springers and Glen Becks feels much more fitting ( ... )
