I guess one of the worst things about abandonment issues that get started when you're young is that they don't go away, even if you sort out why you have them. Blaine is scared of rejection at this point because he's always assumed that he's been rejected. He doesn't really know any other way to view his parents.
One of the most impressive things for me about the real story this is taken from is how the second boy, who was only five (!!) when he was taken was such a little fighter who refused to accept what was happening to him, and how his acting out is what finally gave Stayner the motivation to get both of them out of there. They were two incredible, incredible kids.
Ah yes. Tom. I always feel such satisfaction when a child rapist goes to jail, and not because justice has been served. There are some societal mores that you just don't break without facing severe backlash, no matter what kind of people you end up serving your time with. This is one of those mores. I think it's safe to say Tom is about to learn how karma works.
